30 BR brass, Peterson vs Lapua for competition

Are the 2 comparable in case capacity and velocities with comparable weight powder charges?
I am asking for results from those who have tested both side by side.
Thanks
Jeff Fountain
Had to reduce powder charge from Lapua to Peterson with my 6BRX and just starting to load some Peterson for my 30BR. Have not had a chance to blow out the brass yet.

watching. I’m interested in this. I’m pretty much done with Lapua. Been trying to get 3 boxes of 6br for like 6 months. It’s always sold out, and when it’s in stock, I can’t even put my card number in fast enough.

I've used Lapua for a long time and still consider it my first choice, given their long track record of quality and consistency. But Peterson is really excellent, as well. Given the periodic shortages of Lapua, I bought a case of the American brand (in 6 BR, for forming into .30 BR) last fall.

Peterson is slightly thicker and has a bit less internal volume (40.25 gr. in Lapua vs 39.44 gr. in Peterson, in formed .30 BR cases). That translates into a need to tweak one's load slightly when moving from one to the other. And the pressure curve is a little bit different between the two. But the good news is they produce comparable accuracy.

In my case, using LT-30 in .30 BR, with 112-115 gr. bullets, I reduce my powder charge by 0.3 gr when using Peterson.

I now have batches of Peterson in the rotation, along with Lapua. I'm as happy to shoot one as the other.

That should be one of my Winter projects.

Get some Peterson 6BR Norma, convert it to 30BR the same way I do the Lapua, and see just how well it compares.
Jackie, there's actually quite a few doing this. With the 'O.G.' traditional length (1.520) chambers, the Peterson 7BR (1.520 length) makes it really simple. For your 30BR 'Jackie' long neck reamer, the 6BR version should do well, based on the 7BRs performance. The 7BR is a bit smaller at the back end (.468-ish) than Lapua which I consider a good thing for many reamers. Haven't measured a 6BR version so can't say on that one.

I've got one 7BR in rotation as my fouler round just to check case life and primer pocket tightness. It gets shot before every record target and after I clean. I stopped counting after 40 loadings. Shot with the Lapua cases, it dumps right into the same hole as they do.

For what it's worth. -Al
