30 BR 1000yrd?

i got a question what would be better for the 1000yrd comps 30br or a standard .308 winchester i would like to get your opinions as to wich i should chamber for my new surgeon rifle im going to order.

thanks

Ryan

.308. The 30BR won't launch a suitable bullet for use at 1,000 yards at a sufficient velocity to be useful at 1,000 yards. For something along the lines of a 175 SMK, a .308 is about the minumum.

ok so 30 BR is out what is the best caliber for long rang shooting?

Well now you've opened a whole new can of worms. For "pure accuracy" in very good conditions, 22 Dashers and 6 Dashers can set records. But the 6.5-284 is a good all-around caliber for all wind conditions at 800-1000 yards. There is increased interest in various 7mm chamberings because of the high-BC bullets now available. And within the Heavy Gun Class, big 30-Cal cases are still predominant. Personally, if I was to build a dedicated 1000-yard Light Gun I'd chamber in some kind of 7mm. But I think the new 6.5x47 Lapua, necked to 6mm, shooting the DTAC 115s, may prove extremely competitive with less recoil and longer barrel life than the 6.5-284s.

ok i c what ur talking about. the deal with the rifle im going to build is its not going to be a benchrest rifle go figure lol br forums i no. Im going to make it a tactical rifle and shoot off of a bipod. Why? because no one in there right mind would shoot 1000 yrd matches off of a bipod, so i will probably go wih the 6.5x47 Lapua or keep the standard 308 winchester. I here good things about the 6.5x47 and also the 308. i want to be the odd one. i want to shoot a cal that nobody would think about shooting. so there i still dont know what i want to shoot.

Since you want to be special, why not make a 22/47 Lapua and shoot a fast twist barrel for the 90 gr JLKs. Neck down the 240 Weatherby to .224 and shoot the 90 gr JLKs. Neck up the 240 Weatherby and improve the shoulders to shoot 6.5mm bullets. Just a couple thoughts.

I know you are looking for something unique, but what is the range you are looking to shoot at? 1k? 1k+?
