30-338 Information Please!!

Hi

I am after infomation on the 30-338 Winchester. What have people found with this caliber. I have read and heard that they are very good. Can someone confirm this, or at least give their opinion on this caliber!!

My caliber choice has come to a 308Baer, 8X68S wildcat or the 30-338 for a heavygun.

Just researching every possibility!

Cheers

Ackley,

Now that we have the 175gr Sierra and the 180 Berger, Jerry Tierney proved the .284 Win can run with the Big boys. He finished 2nd in HG at the NBRSA Nationals with a 19-lb F-Class rifle. Just neck-up,and turn) 6.5-284 Lapua brass.

I know I didn't answer your question, but it seems like the 7mm's day has arrived.

I used to shoot a .30-338 in long-range hi-power match-gun class as a military competitor. Army MTU came up with this as they considered it better than the .300 Win mag as it has a longer neck. It has about 5% less capacity than a 300 win mag.
Norma made it legit as the 308 Norma magnum. I was able to push 190 SMK at 3100 fps out of a 28" hart barrel on a pre-64 model 70. Very accurate. M9

A good friend made one up, and while it did OK, it wasn't worth all the trouble over a 300WINMAG. Between the brass prep and dies, it just didn't seem worth it. He now shoots a 300WSM and likes it much better.

Its really no problem, just run a .338 mag case into the die & its done. I bought a 308 norma die off E-bay today for 4.50. Its more accurate & much better barrel life than a 300 win mag. The longer neck really does help. M9

This isn't really a wildcat. Never was. In the beginning Lake City made the cases for Army MTU. Then Norma adopted it as the 308 Norma Magnum. I wonder if you can still get the cases from Norma? Doesn't really matter you can use 338 Win mag cases, 264 Win mag cases Or even 7mm Rem mag cases. You could make them from 300 win mags but you would have to set the shoulder back. Best I remember a case full of H870 & a seirra 190 gr MK was a very accurate load. M9

a 300 WEA match chamber, short throat ) can be a easy solution

perfect water capacity for 30 cal
good case from Win, strong ) very good from Norma
no custom set of dies
available plenty of proven accurate load

newt choice will be a Baer or a 30 STW, if you go to 30 STW carefully go with tight base chamber and 0.336 neck to ba bale to keep your primer pocket tight and get a full neck clean after neck turning

carefully check headspace regulat GO gauge is junk for accuracy use, a GO minus 0.002 or 0.003 will be far better

good shooting

I shoot a .30-338 in 1000yd BR. I shoot 210gr Bergers in a 1:10 28" barrel. Velocity is about 2900-2950fps, I don't believe speed is the answer. Mid 70gr load of H1000. There is some load data from some powder and bullet manufacturers. I use Norma .308 Norma brass, must be trimmed OAL and fireformed. Hot loads will loosen primers in the Norma brass. Having a throat for the long bullets is a must of course.

I have read with considerable interest the discussion about the 30-338. I had one made up about 10 years ago with a DOuglas premium barrel and it really was a shooter! ANd now with the heavy weight 30 caliber bullet that Sierra makes,240 grainers), I have considered building one with a 30 caliber Hart Barrel with a 1-9 or 1-8 twist to help support this heavy bullet and use it out to 1000 yards. Any advice out there about it or would you long range shooters use a 300 WSM case instead or something different. I have about 100 338 Winchester cases for this project just collecting dust in the reloading room at home. SO what do you guys think? Something feasible or would you use a different caliber,or as all of you English high-brows say "calibre"?

no need 1 in 8 or 1 in 9 in a 30.338 to make a winner, a regular 1 in 10 will work fine and 240 grain is bit too heavy, recoil ) too specialized for 1 k only, new SMK 210 can be better, lower winf drift because that faster even with lower BC ) accuracy is not only a BC concern because that a fact you get less wind driff but you need to get enought velocity, Beger 210 can do the job too .

in 30.338
I will go with tighter chamber base tio hold primer and avoid " pregnent " case base
338 neck to allow making case from 7 REMmag or from 338 win mag, I use Sako case in 338 win mag )
and regular match throat with a 0.3083 lead and a 1.5° deg throat angle

good shooting

Had 3 , 2 I rechambered to 300 win mag . The last one was used at Williamsport . It was pretty good , can’t remember the loads but have them with the gun . It’s nothing that a similar 300 win mag can’t do with alot less prep time .
26 or 28 douglas stainless originally from Flaigs gunshop in Millvale Pa .

Anybody looked at a .300 SLR? .300 winch with the should pushed down to 30 degrees, Little longer neck!

300WSM 300 SAUM and never look back. Dantec thats one I haven't seen in years . Maybe Long Range hunting pre Len Backus days. He must be 200 years old cause Ive never heard anybody mention a wildcat or a mod to a chambering that he hasn't already done.
