.30-30 win

a buddy of mine and i were thinking of a csharps arms 1885 highwall with a 34 inch barrel chambered in .30-30 win with a long throat and a 9" twist to shoot the 210 to 230 grain bullets. your thoughts please

cmillard...May I suggest you call C. Sharps Arms and talk to them...good people. My brother and I own C. Sharps Arms Model 1874's chambered in .45x2 7/8"(.45-110's). We are VERY pleased with the quality and workmanship of these rifles.

Howdy !

IMHO... you won't/don't need that long a barrel. For a .30-30....even w/ the "slower" powders and a full case, you'd be able to consume the powder charge effectively with a shorter barrel length.

Gun handling manners are additional considerations. The rifle's " balance " point would be well fwd.
Perhaps, too much so ?

If irons aren't going to be the sole method of "sighting" your targets, then there's no argument for
the extreme barrel length being needed as an adjunct to open sight' radius ( when a rifle scope is utilized ).

JMHO.

If you are going to be using a tang sight I would go with a 30" barrel. That makes your overall sight radius right at 36" and makes it easier to do your sight setting. The only reason that you would even need a long barrel is if you were loading black powder and the 30-30 would never need that long a barrel to burn it's load of BP.
