30-284 shehane load development

I just got my rifle that is chambered in 30-284 shehane and was wondering if anybody has shot this clambering my chamber has a .177 free bore and I intended to shoot Berger 200.20x

Your cartridge should have almost identical charge weights (case capacity) as a 30-06. I would think that RL-16 would be a good starting point.

I shot a couple of .30-284's for a year in F-Open, using the 230gn Berger Hybrids. I think your free bore will work for the 200.20x bullets though if it was mine, I think I would throat it out a bit more, maybe to .190" or .210". That's just my opinion though - when I was loading for it, the 230's seemed to like to be a little shallower in the neck (I tested a couple different throat lengths using a uni-throater). I used H4350, it worked really well for me. My opinion is that RL-16 might be a little too fast (it's a little faster than H4350). I think trying something a bit slower than H4350 might work out pretty well too. My fill ratio was pretty low, even though it shot pretty well.

I have found that RL-16 is sometimes SLOWER than H4350! However, I have shot enough RL-16 now that whether it is a quarter of a shade faster or slower, it is not due to RL-16. I believe it is due to the "lot-to-lot" variations in H4350! So far I have used 3 different lots of RL-16 and found them to be exactly the same, not so with H4350. Having said that, I believe that H4350's lot-to-lot consistency is better than H4831s, which can vary up a grain in a .284!

Sorry Ben, but it can't be "sometimes" anything - it is either faster or slower (hint: it's faster). It's like a physics thing. Lots may vary, but not to that degree. As always, you are free to believe what you like though. :)

I have fire formed the brass and started some load development with RL 16 but have not gone out to shoot them yet. I should go out with in the next two weeks and do the initial testing. I'm excited the fire forming loads were shot with RL 17 and easily hit 2700 fps with 48gr.

Jay, what twist barrel did you use?

What bullet you plan on using?

You might look at what the Swiss K31 guys are using as far as powder. The 7.5x55 is nothing more than the 284 with a 30-30 sized rim. I have shot thousands of rounds through my K31, cast bullets so I can do you no good.
