.30-28 Nosler

No animal has ever asked how many clicks I had on the scope.:D

I actually built this to see about potentially shooting up to 230's. Everything I've read (on normal hunting length barrels),have stated the full length rum coming in around a max of 3050 with that bullet. I'm going to bump it tomorrow myself, as I thought he meant a "shinny" ejector Mark. Fact is, I have the plunger in a drawer, and it barely left a faint shadow. My thoughts are that the 92 grain load at 3066 would be very useable actually.

The most likely scenario for me will be 215's, and a stable single base powder. But I'm gathering data early on so as to have notes to go back on.

The minute the 26 came out I kind of thought 30 or 33 bore. The capacity isn't all that much greater than a win mag, but it's running with it's bigger brother(must be that secrete chamber finish):p. The beauty of the noslers is the length. Finally a non belted case of appropriate capacity that can be throated to properly seat big bullets AND be comfortably a repeater.

Edit later... Cody was also very impressed by the beast brake. We've got to play around with several brakes, on different platforms. This thing is unreal, I highly recommend it for recoil reduction.

Tom,

Have you ever shot with a Harrell's brake? Especially the slotted one. Also, have you ever shot with a brake that had the farthest three side ports angled back, but the fourth and closest one straight out? The fourth one is supposed to cut some of the blast affect from the shooter. I was leaning towards Harrell's, but read very good things here about the MBM Beast. For a 300 RUM, by the way.

Thanks much,
Terry

Terry,

I have had one harrells on a 308 Norma. It wasn't as effective with 215s at 2950 as this one with 230s doing 3170. This rifle is lighter, driving bigger bullets faster, and I'm spotting impacts myself better even than my 20+ pound truck guns.

Tom

Beast it is then.

Any thoughts on the two piece design?

Danny,

I'm throated out pretty far, probably the equivalent of a 300-330 fb. Now that the 225 didn't really light my fire, I would probably go 250 -280 and stick with the 230s.

Tom

Thanks Tom I'm going to build one of these for my buddy and ill probably end up building one for myself too just because hahahah. What is your COAL with the 230gr Hybrid?

Thanks for your help Tom, I got an email in to JGS for a reamer print they have on file. I'm sure somewhere in .250-.280" would be a good fit.

Danny,

Did you get a response back from JGS regarding reamer print for 30-28 Nosler? I have everything to build a 30-28 Nosler, but we need a reamer.

I know i am reviving an old thread here. I am very curious if any of you guys with 30/28 Noslers got any updates on how they are performing with 230gr projectiles and H1000 or Retumbo?
I am very interested in this chambering as it looks to be almost identical in capacity to the 300 Norma Mag.

Regards SamF

The 215/h1000 combo works so well I didnt try 230s. I do prefer the 230 in the 300 Norma improved as you can get them in the velocity range I prefer for a hunting rifle. This is a really good choice for a larger 30. The 300 Norma is great as well but there are not many good action choices out there for the increased bolt thrust loads. The 30-28 has plenty of options for actions.
