Probably not much difference.
But inside 200?
I’d take the 06 unless I already had the 7mag.
Loaded with modern bullets and powders, the old 06 is still big medicine!
Gary
For the record, the only bull I have killed was with a 7stw.
Never shot an Elk and probably never will but my ex-boss was born and raised in Wyoming and has hunted Elk throughout the west with his family and friends and they've taken a few. Their rifle of choice - the old 30 06 with 180 bullets.
Inside of 200 yards no advantage. I have killed elk with ,260 rem, 6.5 x 284, 270 win, 270 wsm, 7mm saum, 7mm rem mag, 300 wsm. I was most always hunting Deer when the Elk showed up. Just put your shot were it needs to go.
No. However, the Fraternal order of Elk has a small committee of elk that research this topic and so far none have survived long enough to complain....
Out to 400 yards the 308, and 7mm-08 get the job done quite nicely, without the excessive recoil.
Elk have been taken further than the above mentioned 400 yards with 257 Roberts, and even 243 Win.
I personally wouldn't use the 243 Win on elk, but that's just me.
