30.06 vs 7mm Rem. Mag. for elk.

Inside 200 yds there is a big advantage with certain bullet's. Both are 110 grains and both are barnes tipped ttsx copper bullet's. 30-06 @ 3500 fps . 7mag at 3600 fps. Their high velocity creates a big wound and they penetrate through bones like no tomorrow. Very accurate also. With copper bullet's the higher the speed the deeper they penetrate. Lead bullet's are the opposite. Lightweight lead bullet's are useless for big game.

No difference. 30-06 is pure classic solution for elk.

Rumor has it that elk are bigger and sturdier these days than they used to be. Thicker shoulders and ribs. I even heard that some elk have a Kevlar like skin that causes bullets to ricochet off without causing any visible damage. I just hate it when I shoot an elk and they walk away like nothing happened. No blood trail, no bullet hole; I just can't believe it! That's why everyone needs a magnum; you need all that recoil and blast to kill this new breed of super elk we've got all over the world. :D

Inside 200 yards a 30-30 lever carbine will do the job too in a nice handy package!
