30/06 or 300wm or ? Really need some input!

Well, on the fence here! This will be a new build, custom action and barrel, really want to do it once! and will be 30cal. It's my catch all, moose, caribou and interior grizzly bear rifle. I have a somewhat dedicated 7mm for sheep. Bear is typically a given, they will move onto a kill remains, just depends if you want to target them and how long you have to hunt. My bear this year took two days to show up, last night of hunt. Shots for bear always limited to 200 or so, just saying...Also have a couple 375's, which have a place no doubt, but not focus here,

General purpose rifle, and max range would really be limited to 500-600 yards, not wanting to start LR hunting discussion, just stating max ranges expected, and ranges I shoot to regularly at paper too,

My current pet rifle is a 300wm, but wears a brake, but also weighs 8 pounds, looking to go into the 9-9 1/2 range, shot a bit unbraked with a different 300, okay but at top end at this rifle weight for me.

pros on the 300wm, just flatter all around,(200 yard zero) 3 inches or so at 300, 7 at 400 and a full 12 or so at 500. (general drops)

pros on 30/06, less recoil, lapua brass, only giving up above trajectory, and giving up less in windage, just 3-4 inches at 500, 62-65 load charge, vs 69-72, no belt? not that I've really had issues

Cons on the 300wm, recoil really, unbraked. but could load down to the 2900 or so, range with the 180. Brass, well its just not lapua

Cons on 30/06, not a laser, but we are dialing for shots over 290 or so anyway? or at least I do, Does not give up a ton of windage though. Maybe not a con but don't mind a 25-26 barrel, not sure where that puts me at velocity)

Have not found a good "tweener", again, just going off nosler load data, but the 30/06 with 180's is averaging 2700, the 300wm is at 3000. Where is the 180 at 2850??

While not a deal breaker, my smith has a .336 reamer for the 300wm, gives me the chance to clean necks, they only have a .340 for the 30/06. Not saying I can't buy a reamer, but again, is some extra cost and another variable.

On the tweeners, looking at the 30/06 improved. I reload 100% of my ammo, so that's not an issue but have to give some barrel life to fire forming. And smith does not have reamer so buying one to go this route, and have not looked into dies....

My seasons are closed, already looking to next year! love to get some thoughts, a kind of, what would you do opinions. Have some time issues, need to give a bolt face to builder to get things going

On a side note, whats the thoughts on a 11 twist? Shooting 180-200 grainers? The 12 gets the vote from the bullet makers, but Remington standard twist is 10, assuming because they also want fellas to be able to shoot 165 on 150's too.

All thoughts, opinions welcome!

Use Bob Green for the 300 wm, he has a .339 reamer and this gets you in a happy medium. Some factory cases work but a clean up won't have you over working the brass.

If you want Lapua brass, then the 30-06 AI is the only option at the moment between the 30-06 and the 300WinMag. Norma makes brass for the 300 RSAUM and 300WSM right now and there is a real possibility that Lapua will finally do something about a short mag case given the interest by F-Class and other long range prone shooters among others.

I have been looking at the possibilities here myself and these are the H2O weight capacities of the various cases according to QuickLoad:

30-06 70.9 gr
30-06AI 72.8 gr
300 SAUM 75.8 gr
300 WSM 78.1 gr
300 WinMag 93.1 gr

If you are looking at straight up and down performance between a 30-06 or a .300 Win Mag. The .300 is one tough cartridge to beat. I have owned 3 of them and now own a .300 R.U.M. I would just as soon have one of my .300 Wins back. ANY magnum simply adds "distance" to the same bullet fired out of a non-magnum. If you shoot a 200grain Accubond from a 30-06 you can reasonably expect somewhere between 27 and 2800 f.p.s. A .300 Win will get you close to 3000 and a R.U.M will get you 3200... There is the "law of diminishing returns" ... After an "efficient" cartridge runs it's max velocity with a given bullet weight, it takes CONSIDERABLY more powder to drive that same bullet to any significant velocity increase over that efficient cartridge. Along with that powder comes more recoil, more barrel wear, more of everything... Having said all that, if you are looking for a 500 yard + rifle for BIG Game and you can handle the additional horsepower, get a .300 Win... Very, Very accurate, laser-like trajectory and somewhat "tolerable" recoil. Combine that with an excellent bullet and you have a GREAT long-range killing machine!

If you are going to shoot realitively heavy bullets, I wouldn't be looking at an 11 twist. You might be able to shoot those but a 10 would probably be better. If you are going to start from sratch with reamer, dies etc, I would take a harder look at the WSM over the WM. Less powder to get the same place= less recoil. 300WSM's love RL-17 & you can get REALLY good velocitys. I own 300 WSM's with both 10 & 12 twist. The 12 is a hammer with 155gr bullets and OK with 165-168 gr. Not so much with 180gr & up. The 10 twist is OK with 155gr but a hammer with 168-180 gr bullets. I don't shoot 200's but I'm sure it would do well. If you are committed to one or the other, my choice would be the 300 hands down. You can load it down but you can't load the 06 up that far.

I looked at the 30/06 for sale, have been some nice rifles up! Trouble is I'm left handed!

I own a 7saum, like the caliber, but feeding was a real bear. That said, the 300wsm is really looking like the tweener.

Rifle twist, the 1-10 does not even make the list for Berger bullets. They basically start at 1:12,

Between the 30/06 and 300wm, keep coming back to fact that you can load a 300 down, but you are running the 30/06 pretty hard to get the most out of it

Have you ever thought about the ruger compact mag. All so the 338/06 Will give you a bit more than the 30/06. I don't have the ruger but it looks like a good compromise to me. It will give 30/06 plus in a sa with shorter tube.

I would all so like to know what others think about the rcm. really like my 338/06 you can go way up on bullet size. Still what can't be done with the 300 mag?

I'm a great fan of the 30 -06 but for you're stated purposes, I'd take a look at the 300 Winchester Short Magnum. However since I've never hunted grizzlies, I'm not sure that this would enough - perhaps an experienced grizzly hunter can chime in.

The very few hunters I know that have hunted grizzlies recommend the 338 Winchester magnum.

well, the good ole .30-06 is hard to beat. I have had a custom rifle in .300 WM and did not like it. got a new barrel and had it chambered in .300 WSM, and that is one nice round--I would take that ANY DAY over a .300 WM. as for which one to pick, that is kind of up for grabs. they both have there strong points and draw backs. I am leaning a little more on the edge of the .30-06, since there LC brass--Lapua brass is not needed if it is strictly for hunting.

For your purposes, I would go with the .300WM and 10 twist. It allows you to use the long OAL bullets designed for long range. Get an action and magazine that will allow a long overall length
in your loaded rounds and throat for them.

Well. Went with the 300wm. Already have a bunch of components. Going to try the Edwards max reducer. We will see. Just trying to take the sharpness out. But we will see

For Alaska the 300 Win is very popular and provides a tad more range. I have both the 30-06 and 300 Win Mag. But I would suggest the 300 Win Mag very versatile caliber that can be loaded down to 308 win level and up to almost 300 WBY levels of performance. 300 Win or 338 Win are 2 great caliber for Alaska hunting.
As for Brake hate the loudness of a brake I have a few but prefer the Mag NA Port it’s a little less effective than brake but much easier on the ears when hunting.
