.30-06 Kicks Like a Mule

I have an old Winchester 70 push feed sporter in 30-06, it was my first hunting rifle and I have not shot it in many years. This was my favorite model 70 as it is super accurate and has consistently shot groups around .7 at 100 yards.

Went to the range today and decided to take it along to warm the barrel up. Brought along 60 rounds of ammo. After 18 rounds my shoulder had enough, freaking thing kicks like a mule on steroids.

When I was younger I would put 30-40 rounds through it without issue but not anymore.
What IDIOT at Winchester decided that to make this rifle without a recoil pad.

After shooting the 30-06 my 6.5 ceedmoor and 223 felt like a rimfire.

Crazy thing is I have another Model 70 in 30-06 a Featherweight with a fixed 4x scope
to keep it light. I was going to bring that one along instead of the 223, good thing I didn't.

I always wanted a 30-06 so when Ggmac offered me a neat old rifle, I jumped on it. I had an old externally adjustable scope that went with the era of the gun so I mounted it. I didn’t use a thread locking compound on the bases because it was just a test run. I grabbed a couple boxes of factory 180 loads and hit the range. I put about 10 shots thru it before I cried Uncle. Then I noticed the scope had rattled loose!
Being my stupid self, when an old 1903-A3 came up for sale here I bought it!

Ain’t free recoil “fun all over”...and other places?
Sometimes we need to bearhug the beast!

Yep, years ago when Rem brought out the Ultra Mags I jumped right on the 7mm & 300 and didn't mind target shooting either one a full evening in the woods. Now adays, 15 plus years later NOPE I'm good with the short action and small stuff.

That is the same route I am taking Bill. They may not have the energy as the big stuff, but if you can place the bullet where it needs to be, still lights out.

Yep, recoil is bother some. I still have the big ones. Way in the back of the safe. The biggest one is farthest back. Now I just hunt much, much smaller elephants, Cape Buffalo and rhinos with my stalking gun a Ruger #1 in 17 Hornaday. I sneak to about 250 yards on my bench, mounted in the rear of the pick up. When a rhino or what ever pokes his head outa the hole, wham!! I can quickly recover from the recoil and get back on target, in case of a miss or a charge. I have a 'spotter" close by with a really 'big gun' if needed, usually a 22-250. We've never had a need for anything bigger on the savanna of Montana. ("Full discloser" in the timber shooting gophers off ATVs a shot gun is handy in case of grizz).

The featherweight actually might be a bit less punishing due to a better stock shape.

I bought two of those Rem 700 barreled actions in 30-06 from PT&G. Had my LGS do the chamber work, and later bought a good used factory Rem 700 BDL stock for one of them. It also has a flat, unpadded buttplate. I plan to bring it to my LGS for the installation of a good recoil pad prior to shooting it. 3 shoulder surgeries will not tolerate that punching without a cushion.
