30-06 help

I have a 80 year old friend who wants me to load some 30-06 for a m1 rifle. Does anyone have a good load for this.
Thanks

r700 3006 with h4350. Has very small pressure mark on the case head with 56.8 at 3.402 oal. .8 moa all day long

edit: left out a 180 Berger bullet. Probably not safe for your M1, but shoots wonders for me.

As you well know, don't shoot any high-pressure 30-06 loads with the old M-1. You might check with Cabela's. They used to sell loaded rounds specifically for the M-1.

Another option is to get an adjustable gas cylinder lock screw. I got mine from Brownell's. Doesn't cost much. It's not the operating pressure of the cartridge, it's the way it beats the hell out of the bolt, action and op rod. Original M1 ammo was loaded to 2500 fps or less. Kind of anemic for an 06...Action wise an M1 can take the pressure of firing modern rounds.
The device has an Allen screw that adjusts to turn down the pressure going to the op rod. You crank it in until the rifle short strokes and then back it out until the rifle cycles and loads properly. This way only the gas pressure needed to operate the rifle is utilized, the rest goes out the muzzle. You can pretty much shoot any reasonable ammo out there once installed and adjusted properly.

Edit: I think the company that makes one is Shuster. Haven't looked lately but I want to say Brownell's might not carry these anymore...might want to try Midway. The one Brownell's sold was called a McCann?? They both worked the same way.

Id be real hesitant to use a stout load of a slower powder like that in an Unmodified Garand. Op rod and gas system react to slow pressure curves way different than a modern bolt action.

Powder between IMR 3031 (quickest) and IMR 4320 (slowest)
Bullets: Sierra
150 gr - less than 2850 fps
165/168 gr - less than 2750 fps
173/178 gr - less than 2650 fps

CCI #34 primers
Case length = 2.494"
Overall length = 3.340"
Primer = Federal 210M

Get a copy of March 1986 American Rifleman. An article by John R. Clarke begins on page 50. If you can't find it, PM me and I will send you a copy.
Get Speer reloading manual #13 or Hornady 5th edition (Try Amazon or Abebooks ( https://www.abebooks.com/ )

Hope this helps

I use H4895 for all my old military rifles, with Hodgdon’s starting loads. It’s mild enough for all of them, and shoots very well.

Hornady manuals used to include Garand specific load data. will try to locate and forward an image of the page.
Do you need enblocs as well?
Cheers,
GotRDid.

125gr bullets like the Speer TNT and 48.5gr of H4895 are pretty sweet shooters and M1 safe. No need to flog that old rifle (or the shooter) stick with M1 powders and data.
