3 miles !

I am the type that would say, I would have to see it, too believe it. Even if it took him more than eight shots.
But then again I guess in time a person could lope one onto a large size target frame/backing.

What’s old is new again..

from the Wikipedia article on the 45-70:

After the Sandy Hook tests of 1879, a new variation of the .45-70 cartridge was produced: the .45-70-500, which fired a heavier, 500 grain, (32.5 g) bullet. The heavier bullet produced significantly superior ballistics, and could reach ranges of 3,350 yards (3,120 m), which were beyond the maximum range of the .45-70-405. While the effective range of the .45-70 on individual targets was limited to about 1,000 yards (915 m) with either load, the heavier bullet produced lethal injuries at 3,500 yards (3,200 m). At those ranges, the bullets struck point-first at a roughly 30 degree angle, penetrating three 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick oak boards, and then travelled to a depth of eight inches (20 cm) into the sand of the beach. It was hoped the longer range of the .45-70-500 would allow effective volley fire at ranges beyond those normally expected of infantry fire.[5]

this was in 1880...

Not sure about keyhole impact, but the extreme terminal angle is very aptly described as mortar like. It appears that the bullet was near the end of its ballistic stability and perhaps developed a rotational wobble or nose/base yaw like a poorly thrown football.
A few very knowledgeable and talented writers/shooters from Precision Shooting (IIRC) duplicated the conditions/equipment/range of Billy Dixon's shot at the Battle of Adobe Walls.
Many of the soft lead bullets were recovered in the soft earth behind the life sized mounted target. These bullets showed the characteristic deformation of an extreme angle impact upon arrival. Fascinating read, and I will try to find a link. Distance was 1,500 yds+.
I wish I had the time, and assets to attempt even a 1K shot.

Can't locate the article, only references to it, but still hopeful.

I went to JBM ballistics to run a trajectory on this...

The article said 390gr 408 bullet at 3160...

I choose a Cutting Edge 408 390gr (Litz)…. running at 3160...zero'd at 100.

JBM only lets you go to 4000yards... so you have to extrapolate these number to 5280 yards yourself

At 4000 Yards distance...345MOA, 14462 inches of drop (that is 1200+ feet)…. and the velocity is only 726 ft/s...
It goes sub-sonic at 2000 yards..

So extrapolating that out to 5180 yards...(this is not exact, but will get us "close")
So I think reran the trajectory for another 1300 yards, but with muzzle velocity of 725 (to match the 4000 velocity).

So taking the initial 14462 inches + 6240 inches gives you total 20,702 inches or 1725 feet or 575 yards of drop , with terminal velocity of 582 ft/s.

To figure MOA from that.... Tangent(angle of Holdover) = 575 (drop) / 5280 (distance) which is 6.215 degrees or 362 MOA holdover...

To calculate the angle of impact we look at the last 100 yards.... 6240-5202 in drop (1038" drop, or 28.3 yards)

Tagent (impact) = 28.3/100 … That is roughly 16 degree impact angle plus or minus..

Fun with numbers!

Hmm, don't think that scope mount measures in minutes; degrees instead? How many DOA for 3 miles?

That's why the target is dated 1-14-18. :)

There are a few versions of this 2018 story but one says 14 seconds.

Down range spotters would hear the shot at 10 seconds after firing and then 4 seconds later, expect to see splash somewhere.

The stories say there was a “technicality” for Guinness not recognizing the shot. The “slight” technicality was the use of a scope.

A second technicality might be the use of radio spotters downrange to guide the shots onto target.
