284 Winchester, your favorite target load

DennisH

I just finished my 284 build and broke the barrel in today!

Looking for ideas for a target load, 600 + yds.

What bullet? I'm about to finish load testing my Shehane. My final 2 loads are both 180 VLD's, jammed .010. One is 54.2 H4831SC, while the other is 55.8. My fireforming load is a 162 A-Max, jumped .010 over 54.2 H4831SC. It gives velocity of 2704.

If it is a standard 284, not improved, @51gns of H4350 with a 180 VLD jammed .010"-.015" is a very popular go to load which seems to be what most people in my area are using.

I had mine built with a 28" barrel for tactical shooting. I felt I would not get the velocity to take advantage of the 180s so went with the 162s.

I use 52.5grs of H4350 with the 162s and its a hammer!! I am on at 1000yds with 25moa and have a vertical spread of less than .5 all the way to 1000yds. I have shot it to 1200yds so far. I love mine!!!

I get great results with 55.5gr H4831sc and 175 SMK's. I also used the same charge for 180 Berger Hybrids with great accuracy, mainly shoot the SMK's now though. CBI 26" .220 freebore. Speeds are not super fast, but both loads hover around 2800fps.

56.2g vit 560 with 175g SMKs, 10thu off the lands.( 2860 fps )
you will need too weigh the brass as its not as good as Lapua ( 56.1g vit 560/ 210 primers )
55g vit 560 with 180g SMKs

Good luck have fun

162 gr A-Max 0.030 off the lands, 54 gr RL-17, WW brass fully prepped, Federal Match primer.

captainzeke,

Have you chronographed your load?

Just curious to see what velocities your shooting.

Also, how far off the lands are you shooting the 180's?

Thanks, Dennis

I think I found my load:

My avg speed with 54.3 grains of H4831sc pushing a 180 Hybyrd is: 2,725.02 . . . my SD is 10.53

Should I keep working on this load, or try to improve it? Not being funny, I know some like their SD to be around 5.00 to 8.00!

The only reason to work on it further is to get more velocity. I have 2 loads to test this week. One is 54.2 and the other is 55.8. The 54.2 load gave a 1/4" group at 200. The 55.8 wasn't quite as good, but still under 1/2" at 200. A High Master friend of mine said 1/4MOA was the minimum acceptable for Open class. So, 1/4MOA is my benchmark.

Rifle looks great by the way!

Keep working the load some more. You should find a node around 2800 to 2850 fps.

What are the spec's on your rifle?

I think you should keep working also. I have a node at 54g and another at 56.2g. Both nodes shoot very well with the higher node having better velocity SD. I wanted to additional velocity for 1000 yards. I agree, 2850 fps seems to be another sweet spot.

My best results, with both .284 Win and Shehane, come at close to full pressure. Loading H4831 SC, you should find a range of .3-.4 grains where the velocity, spread and accuracy do not change much. My application is Long Range F-Class and usually look for ES no more than 15, preferably closer to 10. Low SD is great. But, if you are seeing one or two rounds of 20 with velocity excursion, you will still lose points. Don't depend on a single group. Load and shoot 25 over the chrono for group to validate. Best primers for me are Russian KVB-7, LR. My current Shehane match load is 2940-2950 from 32". That load produced five successive groups of 10.5/4.6 to 14.2/5.6.

Gator what is your load in the shehane chamber is it close to mine or higher thanks Isaac

I shot 57.0 at Raton and it was too low for the morning temps. The same load hammered on a 90° day here in San Diego. I am up to 57.4 with 816 rounds on the barrel. Keep in mind that the velocity is in a 32" barrel. It is still a reasonable load that gives me some headroom for a hot barrel. My water capacity is 68.2 grains, OAL is 3.255" and jump .015". The load might still be too hot in a given rifle. Approach with caution.

Think I need to chrono my load ! I don't think my iPhone and ballistic chart isn't giving me a very accurate velocity ! Thanks Isaac
