284 in a s/a

I was thinking about building a 284 on a savage short action. It is a single shot so feeding from a mag isn't a issue. I was just wanting to know if i would be able to shoot the long bullets such as the 180 burgers?

I had mine built on a SA Savage target action, RBRP. It will not eject a loaded round, but ejects fired brass just fine.

You can, but you won't be able to take advantage of more case capacity unless you seat them out long. I've seen a bunch of guys building those and wsm's on long actions for the ergonomics of it. I've got a new custom 7wsm mounted on a rem long action with a krieger 8.5 running 175smk's bout 2850 and 168vld's about 3000. My coal is 3.115. that's .005 off. The wsm is approximately the same length as the .284 win when using long bullets. The ergonomics I was talking about is being able to eject a live round.

Here's an Idea of what I'm talkin about. The left is a factory 140gr at 2.86" and the two on the right are 175 and 168 at 3.115"

You can also mill out a cut in the SA receiver to allow loaded rounds to eject if you think it will be a problem. I just pull the bolt on my .284 XP's when I want to remove a loaded round, never figured it was a problem..

I built a .284 on a Remington 40X single shot last winter and I use the Sierra 180 grain bullet. When loading you have to put the bullet end into the chamber first and to take out a loaded round it has to come off from the extractor and with the bullet end in the chamber area take it out from the base end first. Works really well. If you didn't know, all 40X's are short actions.
