284 Win, RL 17, and magnum primers?

I have a friend who has a 6.5X284. He buys reloads from a very experienced shooter who uses magnum primers in the reloads. I don't know which powder he uses.

My question is: does anyone have any experience using magnum primers in 284 Win. with RL-17 powder? Alliant calls RL-17 a 'short magnum' powder I'm using a 3.14 COAL and 168 VLD Hunting bullets.

Thanks!

It's probably just the combo that worked well for him in that rifle, it could easily have been the other way around (LRP). When I use the slower (4350-4831 and slower)powders I test with both Mag and Standard primers at the same time (I think it saves a little time ).

It's not a hard powder to light up properly so either will probably work fine. I use the mags in my 300WSM loads because they're hunting loads in often very cold temps, so it's more about peace of mind than accuracy for me.

CJ6, do you adjust charge weights for magnum primers?

I'm using Wolf L-R primers in a 284 Shehane and have two different loads with RL-17 in single digit ES. I see no reason to test further.

It's unbelievable the low ES & SD this rifle will produce with RL17. I have tried all primers, and the load is not picky. I just use WLR's with no problems.

I have used RL-17 in my K31 for a while now as well as my 7X57 hunting rifle. When I started in long range BR, I shot a 243 WIN and used H1000 to preserve the barrel. I tried RL-17 and it didn't work at all. In retrospect, I think RL-17 works best at higher chamber pressures. My 284 WIN has been switched from H4831sc to RL-17 with excellent success. In fact, I can get 180 Hybrids going at a good clip with RL-17, much more MV than H4831sc.
I bypass the temp instability by carrying all my ammo to the range in an insulated case. I shoot in Sacramento from 32 deg to 110 deg! No problem.
