284 Win on Win Model 70 short action.

Im building a 284 win on a Model 70 short action featherweight hunting setup. I know i have a lot more options with remington 700 but i already have a 284 on a 700 long action. Just want to have something different. My smith says he can take the spacer out of the magazine and shorten the bolt stop so coal should not be a problem. Besides i only plan to shoot 140 to 160grn bullets. Does anybody have any experience with this setup?

I've built 4 or 5 284 based rifles on Win 70 SA's. I used a WSM mag box and follower along with shortening the bolt stop. That gives you 3.050" internal length and works very well. My favorite one is a lightweight 25-284 on this platform. Also have done straight 284.

Is there a reason you used a WSM mag box and follower did you have feeding issues? The action and mag box i have was for a 7mm-08.

With the WSM box, there is less taper on the sides and it just seems to fit better, along with allowing the longer OAL. Most have fed without a hitch, smooth even, and then I believe one or two had a few hiccups. It was awhile ago, and it may have been the straight 284. May have something to do with the larger diameter, longer bullets and tipping the round up sooner in the feeding cycle. That would require a little work on the feed rails to correct. The only one I still have is the 25-284, and that one feeds slick as can be with no alteration.

Here you go Winchester 284 factory 1 of 200 made just before the Winchester factory was closed according to the original owner

Interesting topic as I have built a 284 on a rem la, built it from a take off F-Open barrel and used my match reamer so I could use 180 berger hunting bullets, which were same as my match ammo. The first problem I had was when ejecting round the head of case would cock in bolt face and not eject. Gun smith opened up bolt face slightly which fixed that problem. Next up was feed problems with 270 mag, so got a magnum box to see if that would solve problem, no go, so replaced bottom metal with centre feed after market Kwik-Clip. That sorta fixed problem as it now cycles fairly well but still a little leary of speed cycling. I have since found a Browning A-bolt in 284, and purchased some 154gr SST's to load for it. I have not had a chance to load and shoot it however just linning up bullet and case beside mag shows I would have to seat bullet way deep into case to fit mag. Makes me wonder what type and weight ammo was sold for that SA back in the day.

I have a 284 built on a Rem LA with no problems at all. Now planning a 284 build on model 70 SA by shorting the bolt stop and removing the spacer in the mag box. This will allow me a COAL of 3.05.

Just checked my hunting rnd 3.200, lapua brass 180 berger VLD hunting.

Sounds like a good project!
Send pictures of progress and or completed rifle, please.

I built my 284 Win on an Interarms Mark X action (long). Was originally chambered in 270 Win. I had to file the lips from the mag slightly to get proper feeding, the 284 casing being slightly larger in diameter than the 270.

I've been getting good results with the 150gr weight bullets.
Best thus far is 150gr ABLR over Norma MRP.
I'm also experimenting with Alliant Power Pro 4000 with good results accuracy wise. Haven't had the chance to chrono them yet.
