284 win help

WOW!

You are shooting .2-.3 MOA at 500 yards and it's bad??? Wish I could suck like that.
My competition standard has been no more than 1" vertical at 500 and groups no larger than 1.5". That tends to hold up and shoot well for me. Maybe I expect too much but my FTR rig shoots lights out using that method.

The only concern I have is the continual rise in poi as the velocity increases and quite large ES on small samples.

How does the pressure look? I'm thinking that, unless you are using coated bullets, 51.7 is near the limit.

If you have the headroom, I'd try just a little higher with once-fired brass. Otherwise, I'd go with the 51.4 or 51.7 and see how it goes for a couple of matches.

I think 51.7 is max. At velocity reading of 2841 had sticky bolt lift.

I'll see how it shoots in match.

That why I thought this combo isn't looking good. The 2 shots in each charge weight are close then the one way off velocity. Two very close velocity readings then one way off.

I rarely get accuracy or consistent velocities with virgin brass. After the cases have been fired once things settle down and I can find a load that provides consistent groups.

Funny how these things work out. I have had GREAT luck with virgin brass. Won a state mid-range championship with new brass.

Just curious, what's your COAL and how far are you jumping? Have you played with seating depth any? Neck tension?

H4831SC was the answer for me. I had the same issues with 4350. I get 2830fps and 6.5 SD with 54.5gr and Berger 180 Hybrid.

I am on barrel number 3. In the first I shot RL17 and jumped the 180 Hybrids 0.032". The last two barrels liked H4350 with thr Hybrids jumped 0.054". Not sure of OAL but my reamer has 0.235 freebore. My necks expand 0.002" on seating.

H-4831SC was the go to powder for me. I think it would be worth it to try Hybred-100 it shoots great in a Winchester Short Magnum.

I have tried out to 25 thousandths jump. Couple looked good so used that for further testing. I need to redo test now that throat is broken in and moved some. I'll check on my CBTO tonight. Neck bushing is giving sized neck 2k less than loaded round

I asked because I thought you might be in a short action and forced to seat the bearing surface below the neck junction. I'm assuming you must be using a long action. Maybe go extreme and try jumping some .060 or more and also jamming some.

It's a short action single shot. Throated long

well finally getting somewhere. I think it is almost good enough for my standards to take it to a match and see how it holds up. Had to go up to 56gr 4831SC to get 2820 fps+. Top one is 56.1 and second one is 56.4

I just saw this thread. I am not surprised by this final post. SC seemed to shoot better for me with less vertical and SD. Cool days I would shoot 55.6 gr and hit 2840fps and hot days only needed 54 gr to get there. I live up north, so conditions vary quite a bit. Given it is winter, you may want to monitor velocities when temps get above 85 or so in Georgia.

I have 1 question and 1 observation. QUESTION: Did you have either a right to left wind or left to right wind? Either one would account for the width of the groups. OBSERVATION: H4831 is well known for fairly substantial variances in burn speed. This time you may very well have a "slow" lot and it is taking you some additional powder to get you where you want to be. DO NOT think that your charge is always going to be the same. The next lot of H4831 powder you use may be considerably faster! I have experienced BOTH extremes... That's why some people buy 32-48 pounds of H4831 (or the SC version) so they don't run out and have to re-develop a load with a different lot of powder.

I never had much success with H4350 but instead have always have had better luck with H4831SC and now H4831 with the .284 and now .284 based cartridges (7mm Walker). But like Ben suggests, I re-test and tweak my load with every different lot of powder, because in my experience each lot is different.

I shoot a Straight .284 with a 32" Bartlein 1:9 barrel and Savage 110 Action.
H4831sc 54.5 gr
CCI BR2
180gr Berger Hybrid
2830 FPS
Lapua brass
Single-digit ES/SD.
This load in my gun is an absolute hammer.
The last 2-600yd matches: 600-41x 599-46x

I had wavering results with H4350 and a sticky bolt at 51.5 gr and then started development with H431SC.
