284 Wheeler

Hello everyone

Can someone shed some light on what a 284 Wheeler is?

I just read an article on accurate shooter about Jay Christopherson and his sucess at the Berger SWN and it seys he shoots a 284 Wheeler.

Is it like a Shehane or something similar?

Thanks for any info

Not sure what Ringostar is referring to, but I'd ignore his comments.

It's a straight 284 with some custom changes designed by @Alex Wheeler based on a crap ton of his own iterative testing. I emphasize "iterative" because it means buying many $200+ reamers with slight changes, just to observe the effect of a given change.

I don't reveal the changes because I don't know them. Even if I did, I wouldn't reveal them against Alex's wishes because I'm not a dick. And people who bitch about not getting that information for free have obviously never spent copious amounts of their own time and money pushing the envelope of innovation. IMO.

If you'd like to try it, Alex will chamber one for you. Along with the reamer design, you'd be getting one of the best chamber jobs available.

Anyone can shoot it, if they want to. Just give Alex a call.

Totally understandable. There’s a bunch of us, Alex included, that have been working to collectively log data on the 300 NMI using various chamber designs. If you added up all the time and money we have collectively spent on reamers, dies, brass, bullets, powders, and custom rifles, I’m sure the number would be staggering. I’m on my second full custom 300 NMI rifle right now. We are slowly but surely starting to amass an impressive amount of data. It’s an amazing round in a compact package

Thats very interesting to hear, In my head I had envisioned a 284 Shehane Improved or something with different shoulder angles or side walls.

Its great to hear of people putting in the time and effort to do these tests and push the envelope with these great cartridges such as the 284 and the 300 NM that @Ledd Slinger has mentioned. Alex looks like hes definitely onto something great.

Thanks for the information,

I just purchased a 7-270wsm with same reamer dimensions as the 284 Wheeler. We will see how she does pretty soon. After that article was out, I think more people asked for a reamer print than a chamber job. Kinda how the gun industry seems.

Yes its a standard 284 case with some changes mostly in the throat (not everything is on the print). JGS names everything after you. I have a bunch of "284 Wheeler" reamers. I have never released this print to anyone. There are multiple reasons. Yes, it takes time and money to figure stuff out. Also its not a one size fits all. You can't apply the same thing to other bullets/cartridges and expect similar results. In fact its been a failure in other cartridges.

Jay is in my opinion one of the top F-class tuners. Thats why I asked him to test this reamer design first. A lot goes into something like this and its a team effort to work through it.

Not looking for specifics, but this would leave me to believe that this geometry is specific to a particular bullet of interest, also taking into account the pressure/velocity specific to the 284?

Seems logical to arrive at a specific ideal chamber/throat spec just as you would an ideal cartridge loading for optimum performance. Mad Cattery at its finest.

From the SAAMI website, this is the .284 chamber drawing. Take note of the throat....not your typical target configuration at all. I would assume that most if not all target chamber throats would be different, with a cylindrical freebore followed by a leade angle.

Won't know until I get some in hand. But I will order a 284 wheeler in a to turn. In my opinion turning wont be necessary once we get brass that wont need to be necked up. I have a lot of BR shooters switching to no turns as well.
Thanks for the reply Alex, looking forward to your findings on the new brass!

I have got a few guys shooting this design and they have all reported similar results with the 180 hybrid. Jay probably has the most experience with it, as well as another case with the same throat he is testing. When necking up from 6.5mm the necks do get a lot of thickness variation. The less you move a virgin case the better.
