284 VS WSM

The .284 Win is an excellent cartridge with extremely good brass available if you neck up 6.5-284 Lapua.

However, a number of elite F-Class and 1000-yard shooters are turning to the WSM cases,300 necked down, 270 necked up, and 7 WSM), to push the latest generation of 7mm high-BC bullets at 2950 fps+. The standard .284 Win case just can't move the Berger 180s that fast,in most barrels).

Now, if you're shooting hunting bullets or 168s, the .284 is definitely a viable long-range cartridge.

In 6.5mm, shooting the 139-142 gr projectiles, the .284 parent case will reach the 2950-3000 thresh-hold that seems to work very well with the available match bullets. The only negative is relatively short barrel life. When you go to a 6.5-300WSM you are starting to get overbore and some of the bullets don't like to be pushed faster than about 3100, so the benefit of the extra horsepower really isn't there.

Conversely, in the 7mm, the extra case capacity CAN make a big difference and put you in the velocity "sweet spot" with the long VLDs.

Information needed on the WSM line of cartridges. Are the
7mm and the 300wsm the same case capacity,if so does anyone know the approximate capacity in grains of water!

Thanks in advance, Wayne

Hi Wayne,
The 7mm WSM has more case volume than the 300 WSM
due to the shoulder being .037" further forward, that change also gives it a shorter neck.
I can't tell you for sure how many grains of water they hold.

RE: For your consideration: Savage is planning to have a 6.5-284 available by April.,Mod. 12F) It reportedly will be SA, stainless receiver and 30" bbl. with 1:8 twist.,right bolt, right port) laminated stock, with accutrigger capable of less than 8 oz... I think I'm interested,,just use a match barrel) especially after reading about The Gun of the Week # 75,Factory-Out-Of-The-Box-Action) article...Larry,Victoria, Texas)

How is Savage gonna get a 6.5-284 working in SA?
Gun#75 is a long action.

If I were wanting to use 7mm, I'D GO 7WSM.

Say a person had a LOT of 300mag brass laying around and was interested in shooting 7mm boolits, would it be feasible to make up a 7mm/300mag?

A 7mm / 300 WM is awful close to a 7mm Remington Magnum in size, with the 7RM being just a bit smaller.

Here's the wieght of the stuff I had laying around.
Norma 300WSM 240-244,15.6-15.8).H2O ~= 81
WW 300WSM..........230,14.9)............H2O ~= 83
WW 27WSM........14.8-15.0............H2O ~= 78-79
WW 7WSM...........227.4,14.74).........H2O ~= 80.5
WW 7mm Rem Mag........230..............H2O ~= 87
RP 7mm Rem Mag.........234...............H2O ~= 86
This representative of the lots of brass on hand and may vary considerably with different lots.
7mmRemMag was fireformed, 7WSM was not, adjust accordionly.
