6.5 WSM and a 6.5-300WSM ?

What is the diference between 6.5 WSM and a 6.5-300WSM cartridge? Would there be any advantages in these cartridges over a 6.5-284? I thinking of getting some kind of 6.5 caliber cartridge for hunting.

I may be wrong, but I don't think there is any difference between the two, It would be around a 264 Win Mag or between that and a 6.5-284. You can achieve very close (within a 20-50 FPS) with the 6.5-284 on a lot less powder, but you would be giving up a lot on case life, as it will be a high pressure load and you will get about 4 shots from lapua brass, 2 from winchester necked down. But fact is if your brass is in good shape, the cartridge is capable. If I were to do a custom, it would probably be a 6.5 wsm of some sort with a long throat and a medium length action if possible.

There might be a difference in the overall length of the cartidge case, particularly in the length of the neck. For example, the neck on the 7mm Remington SAUM is quite a bit longer that the neck on the 300 SAUM, about 0.020 to 0.025 inches, so, if you neck the 300 down to 7mm, the chamber neck is longer than the cartridge neck if you use the standard reamer dimensions for the 7mm. I think there are threads on this site about whether to neck up or neck down WSM brass that might give a definite answer.

Typically the 6.5 WSM is formed from 270 WSM brass and the 6.5x300 WSM is form from 300 WSM brass. I have the 6.5 WSM and like it. Pretty much it works out like Tony said with just a difference in the length of the neck. They should perform the same. You can gain about 150 to 250 fps over the 6.5x284 with either of them.

Check out the 6.5 remington mag it will beat all the short 6.5's
and macth the 264 mag with most bullet weights.
