284 vs 7-08 in 700 sa

What make of actions are your rifles?
The 7-08 is a 24" sporter Rem 700 , the .284 is a 24" sporter Savage. I limited the OAL to 2.8" on the savage to mimic what was possible for the Rem in case I wanted to re-barrel the 700. It turns out I don't like giving up the mag capacity even for 1 round. I am either going to open the 700 action for a Wyatt mag box or replace the receiver with Defiance or Loan Peak. At those velocities Bonded bullets and solids seem to work better for me.

I was intrigued with the .284 way back when, but went 280 because at the time Rem did not offer the chambering and I am a Remington man from back when I was a Remington boy. The Savage offered a low cost opportunity to try it in the last few years so I did. I like the cartridge, a lot, but for a hunting rig I am willing to give up the 200 fps for the extra shot.

I shoot 7mm 139/140's for whitetails @ 25-400 yds and the 7-08 works excellent.

John 800,

Here is some additional data that may be useful in helping you decide.

My .284 Win chamber is straight SAAMI head spaced to my go gage +.001”

Hear are COAL dimensions with various bullets touching my lands using the SP/Hor tool.

Take these dimensions for what their worth, add or subtract a few thousandths for measurement error, throat wear, and the machining tolerance of the chamber and you will see the COAL can be a problem for SA Rem 700 actions. You’re stuck with jump weather you want it or not, even with the Wyatt box. I’m not scared of jump, but everyone has to decide for themselves.

Personally, I would barrel the 700 for std 7-08 with the Wyatt mag box and figure out another path for a 284 Win.

The hornady's love to jump. Most of my accuracy is with the Hornady bullets that jump .050+. My oal is 2.975+ in a mag fed short action. I'm still getting 3,000 feet a second with a 162. No reason no need any more speed than that in a short action 284. I wouldn't do a thing different in fact I'd build another one in a heartbeat. That being said it wouldn't be a mistake to go with the 7-08. You wouldn't get the speeds you would with the 284 but it would still get the job done.
