284 vs 7-08 in 700 sa

I was thinking of rebarreling a short action 700 i have that is currently a 22-250. I was thinking of a 284win but i am not sure if they will feed in a short action without modifying the action which i do not want to do. I would plan to shoot 140 and 150 grain bullets probably an accubond lr 150. Does anyone know if that would fit in the mag? If its too long or wont feed i may just do a 7-08. What am I giving up velocity wise? 100fps? 200? According to sierra book data they are closer than I expected.

I have an original 284 Winchester lever action 88 and am restricted to mag length which is 2.860". That really limits the bullets you can use, but as far as modern bullets go 120gr and 140gr Barnes TSX fit perfectly. 140gr hit 2950fps though.

7 saw looks interesting.

If you're going to the expense of a new barrel anyway, how about the Ackley version of the 7-08. It should pick up about 100fps or so over the parent cartridge and it eliminates most of the negative aspects of all 308 based cartridges. The downside is the extra expense of Ackley dies over standard.

Great rifle. Wish I had your problem!

Im not against it. Is there a standard dimension for dies so i can just order dies or do i need to have them custom made according to the reamer used for the chamber?

284 Shehane in a short action with a 0.040 freebore works slick. A couple guys in our club shoot them. They run the 180 hybrids at 2805 out of a 26 inch bbl. They are extremely accurate.

The trouble with that is they wouldn't fit in a standard mag, single load is fine just no mag.

With the 0.040 freebore, they fit in a standard AICS magazine just fine. That's the beauty of it. Its a lot of hassle with brass sizing for the results IMO. A properly throated SAUM would be easier and probably be better.

The SAUM keeps coming up in the short action threads.
Problem is your not meeting the OP's standard bolt face criteria.

When i had my 7mm-08AI it was in a Savage action. The 140gr Berger VLD was loaded to 2.895" for 0.010" off the lands.
With the factory 22" barrel i had these results for my accuracy nodes. (Not max load, but fairly close too it)
Cases were PPU full length sized when new, then neck sized for all subsequent loadings. Primer pocket uniformed. Flash holes uniformed & deburred.
Primers Fed 210M.
Bullet 140gr Berger VLD.
RL17 was the speed king with 2,916 fps.
H414, W760, Alliant PP2000MR all gave decent velocity. 2,832 fps.
Varget, IMR4895, RL15 gave 2,756 fps.

Alliant PP2000MR was my go to powder with ES-6/SD-2.

Ramshot Big Game is shown as giving decent velocity numbers, but due to it not being readily available locally i didn't try it.

CFE223 gave good velocities, but accuracy just not there. Real high ES/SD.
I went through my test pound & never bought more.

I never did get the 150gr ABLR while i had that barrel. My other 7mm's really love them!

Short action 284 Win....

Mine is a commercial Mauser long action.
SAAMI reamed.
Get a custom reamer!
The throat/freebore is loooong!
150gr ABLR & ELDX at 2.995"
Nowhere near the lands!
Just using Hornady COAL from manual X. Puts bullet shank/tail at neck/shoulder junction.
Measure your magazine. If shorter, you'll be intruding on powder space.
Since your asking about the ABLR, i'm assuming a hunting rifle.
On the short action it may be a PITA to eject a loaded round!

Here's my .02 and personal experience with a .284 Win with a Short action Rem 700. I wondered for years how well I could get the .284 to perform in a SA with an OAL of 2.975. Accurate mag makes 5 round magazines without the binder plate that will fit a 2.980 loaded round. Did a little research and decided to pull the trigger on a Short Action LR .284 build. Wasn't for truly long range but out to 600-800 yards max and mostly my woods whitetail rifle. Built it on a Rem 700 SA, 25" Bartlein Rem Sendero contour barrel, Manners T4 stock. Started using H4350 but moved to RL17 just to try for accuracy while achieving 3000 fps with the 162 Amax. Well, success followed. 3000 was easy with mag length rounds and accuracy followed. No, it's not a 180 but for my needs, it's the perfect setup. I can bang steel easily at 1000+ and harvest deer at long ranges as well and have a great woods rifle using 160 Nosler Partitions. The 160 Noslers hit the same holes as my 162 Amax bullets at 100. At 500, there 2" left and low. Pretty amazing really. I've obtained a bunch of RL26 and will experiment with it in this .284. Keep hearing how hard the RL17 is on throats so I'll hope to see good performance and accuracy with the 26. If not, I have some RL23 as well. Another item available is from Hawkins. It's bottom metal that offers extended OAL rounds (3.10 I believe). Slight modifying of the action is necessary for fitment. Mags are a bit longer I think. Just another option without going into a Savage Sort Action which does allow 3.00 OAL rounds. Good luck. John

As some have guessed this will be a hunting rifle, whitetail here in mn, no elk to worry about lol. Shots are as close as “just out of bayonet range” to about 400 yds.
Perfect for your use. Also the 7-08 despite other opinions isn't even close to the .284 in a short action using 160 class bullets. I shot one with the 160s and they don't compare. You could run 140s for deer and if ever needed heavier, the 150-168 class bullets will perform great. FWIW, the 7-08 is also an excellent option but a step down from the .284.

I went with a 7-08AI when I decided to so something similar. Mine is built on a Tikka action with a Bartlein barrel (20"). I am loading to mag length (Mountain Tactical Gen 2 mag) which is 2.860" with the Nosler 150 grain ABLR and that puts me 0.005" off the lands. I am currently getting right at 2825 fps with a very modest load of H4350. I could push it more, but the accuracy is there, so I am happy.

Shot a doe this deer season at a lasered 313 yards and she went down like she was hit by the Hand of God.

Redding has dies listed in their catalog, in the chart for Series D die sets. Dimensions for Ackley Improved cartridges are pretty much standardized, the guys I know that shoot A.I. chambered rifles all use Redding dies or Wilson hand dies, these require an arbor press.

Excellent choice I think the ackley improved is an excellent upgrade to that 7-08

I went thru the same scenario a few years ago. There is a pretty long post on here about it. I went with 7mm-08 and glad I did. I would probably do a 7mm-08 AI if I was doing it today. No reason other than to have something different.

Took a doe at 413 yards, ranged.
7mm-08AI with 140gr Berger VLD.
To this day i'm still wondering how she turned 180° and went 20 yards.

This thread is what I pondered for years. Originally going
as a .270 bullet, times changed and better bullets were to
be had in 7mm. So if you have time to tinker over the winter,
and still want to stay in the realm of a short action, standard
bolt face......
