284 shehane

Hi guys. I would like to know if someone is loading this caliber.
What speeds are you getting with a 28" barrel and 180gr bullets?
Powder i am looking at vihtavuori n165 and n560.
Thank you

Some of this decision will be based on the supply of any powder you might select for running this cartridge/bullet combination. Bergers are not always available here in the U.S.

I'm guessing that your chosen path is probably F-Class or something similar. Originally, I shot a Shehane but using a 30" barrel. Everyone had jumped on the bandwagon for this cartridge so I didn't see a down side when I built it.

Your choice of powder as stated might come down to the volume of shots and speed of firing.

VVN-165 is a cooler burning powder which always bodes well for barrel life. The single drawback is a slightly lower velocity range.

VVN-560 is a faster (hotter) burning powder and therefore probably will have more of an effect on your throat. You will probably see a gain in the velocity range of maybe 75-100 fps. when compared to the cooler N-165.

As always, I suggest testing both if you have both to see which one favors your chamber and barrel. Your barrel may show a definite preference or not.

I switched to the 7mm SAUM and the Hornady 190 gr. A-Tip bullets. Occasionally we can find a supply of higher grade brass and the A-Tips seem to be consistently in stock.

Enjoy the process!

Thanks guys.
I'm going to start buying components.
It will be difficult to find berger hybrid 180gr

Try RL17. With a 28" barrel you'll see close 3000 fps. My straight 284 with a 30" barrel gets to 3K with 180s. No need for the Shehane with RL17. Accuracy is great as well.

I have found in several different cartridges, including the Shehane that RL-17 goes from mild to wild in just a few tenths of a grain. I have used RL-16 and RL-23 with good success in the Shehane and am going to try N-160 when I find the time.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

H4831sc was always my go to powder, now that I can't get it I use RL26 and 23.
If you're chasing velocity then N165 will be to slow, and although N160 is plentiful I have never used it!

Due to availability issues, h4350 was ok, but I’ve been running h100v with 180 scenars with excellent results so far.

Thanks to all for the help.
I just wanted to know if I can get to the node of 2800-2840fps with vihtavuori n160-165 and a 28" barrel.
I would not like to go below 2800 fps
I would also not want to use double base powder

Cheers
