.284 Shehane

It looks like a great Heavy Gun cartridge.

Is it as good in the wind as it looks?

Your gun? Loads you like? Any quirks?

Terry, Mine is a trued 700 stainless with a 30" Krieger , 1in9twist in a Shehane ST1000 stock, Kiff bolt and over sized bolt knob. I shoot 180 VLD's Berger and 162 A-maxes out of it. They both shoot well. Berger 180 hybrids shoot great also. Seem to be easier to tune than the VLD's. I have shot 5shot groups at 600yd that were around 3" and 1000yd 5shot groups around 5". I know some shooters have shot smaller groups. I use H4831 and IMR7828 they both work good. H4831 start around 53grs and work up looking for any signs of pressure, not all rifles will shoot these loads. 7828 start around 51grs and work up. I use Fed and CCI primers. You may have to try each and compare your es and velocity to get the best load for your rifle. Accuracy is what I look for 1st then speed. My avg speed is around 2970. I can post some pics of the groups at different yardages, but you will be shooting them also. Normally it is figured that if you can shoot 3/4" groups at 300 it is good enough...I am sure other more proficient shooters will chime in to help.
And about the wind it seems to drift less than other rounds, but I a believe it is because of the high BC and the 7mm diameter.

Hope this helps..

I drive one also. I don't run it at 600 much which is mostly what I shoot now. I got a new barrel for it, if this one is a good one I'll use it more at 600.

I think it's great. Some say it's not enough case to get to the next node. I think some are going to the 7-300.
I like this cart. just fine. One load I use in one of my barrels is 47gr. of 4350 under a 180 gr vld. producing 2775fps from a 24" bl. that has decent accuracy. I could heat it up but didn't feel I needed to. I have a new 30" barrel I'll try to get going for next year.

I built another 6dasher that I need to get going, it will be my main gun next year. I plan to tote the 7mm for the windy days. I'm gonna try to run the new 180 hybrid at 2900. It should hold wind pretty solid. I haven't looked at the numbers yet against the dasher shooting 105s @ 3100 but I think 2900 from the 7 will be good.
It seems as though I'm always testing at the match. It would be nice to have a gun dialed in before.

Time will tell, Jim

I sent my 6.5 284 Shehane die to Jim Carstensen to open up.

I think Redding makes them as a custom. I got my 6.5 die from Bill Shehane.

You can get them thru Redding or Bill. I got mine thru Bill. Check out his web site.
www.scopeusout.com was the link I used.

Terry, The rifle is capable of shooting smaller groups, just needs a better shooter. I am sure it would print 1 1/2" groups or maybe smaller. Consistency
in every detail from brass to load to primers.. I will shoot some more at 600 and a 1000 and let you know.

hope this helps

I think I've been around the middle of the pack with most groups in the 2" to 3" range, same as my other guns.

I do better with other peoples guns. :o
Not sure yet if it's my barrel, load or me but I believe this chambering to be plenty accurate. I saw how well Charles Ballard did when he brought his 284. But then again, I think most any chambering can win with the right barrel and load.
The skill is finding a good barrel and load.

JP it is good to see you are planning on shooting instead of working ;D. I post the same time you do. I figured this thread would have your attn.

Jim

Terry, I use my 284 Shehane for F class competitions here in the UK and it is an improvement over the 6.5x55AckImp I previously used. Using a 7mm 180gr Berger VLD seated 10 thou into the rifling, with Lapua 6.5x284 brass expanded and neck turned to o/dia 0.310 (0.313 chamber) with 56.5 grains of H4831SC with CCI BR2 primers, I am getting velocities of 2910 fps without any pressure signs. I did go up to 57.8 grains but had hard bolt lift and the case headstamps had shiny marks on them and brass flowed into the spring plunger.
I use the rifle (BAT/Tooley MBR stock) which has had a new 284 Shehane barrel done for me by Grant Taylor in Scotland, between 600yds and 1000yds. On its day and when I get the wind calls right, it is a cracker (but I am the weak link and make crap wind calls 75% of the time).
I was firing off some old ammo at 300yds and all hit a one inch square and stayed inside, so the trick is to get your load right and it will do the business. Recently at 800yds 15 out of 15 shots were in the V Bull (your X ring) and elevation spreads are very consistent which is what you need at longer ranges.
I am sure that there maybe better cartridges that are faster and perform better in the wind, but maybe you will not get as much barrel life out of them.
A mate of mine uses a straight 284 and that is also shooting very well, so you pay your money and take your choice, but I am pleased with mine. I was going to use RL17 to try and get my velocity over 3000fps, but was warned by a fellow F class shooter that he experienced problems with carbon ring build up and it stopped shooting accurately during a competition. As for dies that were supplied with the new barrel I use a Wilson bullet seater and a Nulon blank done with the reamer for the chamber so get very little runout if any. I also use a 308 bushing to give little neck tension and sometimes use a 307 bushing.
Up to now I have used my first batch of 50 cases 7 times and anneal each time.
Best wishes

Hey Les,
Was that before or after your curly wurly? :)

Sorry guys this was a bit of a laugh at the recent European champs at Bisley.

Should I be looking for my Shehane to do a "curly wurly"?

Eating a Curly Wurly makes you want to sing,
and after F Class shooting it is the next best thing.
Long and thick, but too many can make you sick!
But after a nice bottle of wine,
my Curly Wurly is mine all mine!

To all our American cousins who might be wondering what the hell us Brits are talking about a Curly Wurly. Here is what one looks like!!! Apologies for going off Topic (Also another chocolate bar)
Les

Hostil, I am like you in the working to much to shoot. But I plan on shooting on my one day off, if hunting permits me to.I need a couple more deer for some jerky I make the kids love it. Now back to the Shehane... I shoot the same load as geordiesniper and same neck size and tension. It is a very good caliber and In the right hands it will be hard to beat.Hostil is a fine shot, I have shot with him before. I use a bore cleaner for the carbon and it seems to work on all my rifles. When you get the chance post some pic of that fine rifle and maybe some of us might be able to do the same.
Do you already have your reamer? If not I have one from PTG..
