284 shehane reloading help

I am about to begin loading some rounds for my new 284 Shehane. I made a dummy round with a piece of brass and a berger 180. At my current seater setting, I have about 0.1" inch of rifling "shine" on the bullet. Too much? Would 50 grn of R17 be about right for tight neck, turned brass, savage SA, new Douglas 1-9 barrel, with berger 168 or 180's? This my first modified chamber, so for me this is uncharted ground.

RL 17 around 52grn works well in some rifles the other powder to use is h4831sc about 57-58 grns this works well with berger vld180s ccibr primers .

This will give you mid 2950fps ish , expect your barrel to speed up around 100fps after 100/150 rounds through a new barrel, so your first few rounds through a new barrel may be a bit slower than you have hoped for.

Make sure you have around 4 thou clearance in the neck in your chamber with a loaded round.(if your chamber is 312 then your loaded round should measure 308ect)

You only need 1 to 1.5 thou neck tention

There are one or two little tricks to loading the shehane all based around neck wall thickness with a tight neck chambering and doghnuts at the base of the neck shoulder, get these sorted and you will have a real v bull machine out to 1000yrds .

I started with this spring with a new Shehane. Barnard action, 30" Bartlein 5R barrel, Lapua brass necked up and turned with Federal 210M primers. After a few rounds of barrel break-in, I ran pressure tests with both RL-17 and H4831SC loading the 180 Hybrid. I stopped at 58 grains with both powders, not because of pressure signs or bolt lift, but because all the info on the net said that was high enough. RL-17 gave better velocities, but seemed loose on the target while doing preliminary testing. I focused on H4831SC after the initial tests.

Ladder tests showed a real sweet spot at 56 to 57 grains of powder over many tests at 300 yards, less than 3/8" vertical, even with fireforming. .001 neck tension, with a slight jam into the lands. I settled on 56.5 grains of SC, running about 2930 when the barrel had about 100 rounds down it. I honestly never experimented with different seating depths because the soft jam shot so well right from the start. The barrel now has 850 rounds through it and still shoots great. I am not sure how much life is left in it so I am pampering it now by only shooting select matches with it.

Hi Art, I just got back from camp perry (1000yd F-Open)I have been working
on a load to compeate while fireforming 7mm 284 to shehane. With this load I have little to no verticle. I did shoot a 195-3x fireforming.I think this is pretty good considering this is my 3rd 1000yrd event, Perry is a very hard place to read conditions. I am using a light load 4831sc , berger 168 vld's just on the lands.
Thanks, Shoot Well, John R Perkins Jr.

I am using lapua resized and turned brass also. We just got a new Cabela's in Charleston,WV. Browsed a bit and noticed they did have bagged 284 winchester on the shelf. May have to buy a bag just to load hunting rounds and get a feel for neck turning. Would almost cry if I lost a piece of that Lapua.
