284 shehane powder

I tried N165 with the 183 SMK's and it was slow with a 100% case fill and the accuracy was poor as well. I use RL 23 exclusively with both the 183 & 184 bullets.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Thanks - I did shoot RL25 and N165 with the 184 Berger yesterday. Started at 55gn each to see what the difference would be. Both powders showed some promise there. At 200 meters - had 1 inch 5 shot groups. RL25 was at 2790fps and N165 at 2840.....

I do have more room to go up - so will see....

Thanks JR

What velocity are you finding accurate 1K loads with RL23 ? My fall back powder would be H4831sc but willing to give 23 a try.

You should be able to pick up a bit more N165 in to a shehane and up the speed, and have accuracy.
A straight 284 is comfortable with 2820-2850 with the right length of barrel and action and 180 hybrids.

The .300 WSM case is 79 grains capacity (H2O), and the Shehane is just under 70. Less powder burn, longer throat life? Real-world performance difference?
162 grains, 0.625 BC at 3100 fps...now that's what I'm talking about.

I have shot the 184 hybrids over RL-23 at 2820, new cases, straight 284 Norma and it shoots clean at 600 with calm conditions. I am currently shooting the same with N160 (52.3gr) at 2800fps/30" tube with a little better precision and less throat wear. N160 should shoot great in the Shehane. I'll have better feedback in 4 days as I will be shooting this load in the Fall open LR Nationals starting tomorrow.

Back from testing - u r correct N165 would not group at all. However, RL25 was grouping well and requires more testing - I was able to get 2905 FPS.

Next I will try H4831SC that a friend has - don’t have any RL23

N160 and N560 is likely a better match to your shehane then N165, unless you can get 57+ grs of powder in it, and still might be.

I'm on my 5th chambering of a 7saum. In three I've tried H1000, usually pressured up around 63gr with no or low velocity. So my findings are the exact opposite of Berger's. IMO, if you fill to 109%, crunch powder when seating, you'd be close to having a face full of steel when you touched a round off. Retumbo never has worked, RL 25, VV N 570 was and is the best, just pricey. Just surprised Berger says this, as they must know hundreds of people are running H1000 in a saum. Sometimes a guy just has to think outside the box and be a pioneer, I'd bet we were some of the first in the country to charge the case with N570. Be cautious, that .317 neck of yours might be a little tight, my loads with Rem brass measure .316. I tried the 317 neck and had to ream it to .319 almost immediately.

How’d it hold up? N160

I had trouble keeping the waterline on all days except one. I had to resort with twisting the tuner to compensate. In all fairness I was having the same problem with H4350. The issues are unrelated to powder choice and, after discussion with other .284 shooter, I think I understand why this gun has been so finicky on the tune. I'll report back after a little more testing.

I was shooting 56.0 - 56.5 gr RL 23 with 180 gr bullets and CCI BR 2. I have since found my absolute new favorite load of 53.0 gr RL 16 180 gr sorted ELDM and Fed 210 M. 2930 FPS and single digit ES. Shot 3 shot groups in the dark with PVS 27 MUNS Night Vision with scope set on 12X measuring 2.3”, 3.25”, and 4.2” @ 1000 yards. And a 4.8” 3 shot group at night using same night vision @ 1146 yards. Shooting better than anything I have tried. (H4831 SC, RL 17, H 4350, RL 23). 1:9 twist Bartlein 5R @ 30”.

Update, N160 definitely has less firecracking than RL-23 and H4350. The precision in my straight .284 was very good with the 180's at 2820fps (I have not shot the 184's with N160 in this barrel yet) I'm at 1600rds on that barrel (first 380 were with 184's and H4350) and the freebore and early lands look great and it is still shooting well. I will now be shooting the 184's and will probably run them in the upper 2700's to 2800 fps...unless the barrel wants a little more velocity. IIRC I was running 50.3gr with the 180's for 2820fps. Should easily get in the low 2900's with a Shehane and a 184 (if that is where your barrel wants to go) but finding a little slower node that has great width, be precise and also kind on the brass will be easy with N160. My vertical issues that I remarked about in my prior post have gone away after running higher 'neck tension' and have allowed me to drop the charge nearly .75gr.

Interesting. How's the brass holding up at that velocity?
