284 Shahane 162 Amax??

What powder is working best for you in the 284 Shehane with the 162 amax bullet??????

H4831SC works well for me. 54.2 gives me just over 2700, soft recoiling and great accuracy out to 600.

I`m really hoping to get as close to 3000-3050fps. as I can....

This will end up being a live varmint rifle.

Maybe I`ll try some of Bob Cauterucio`s 156gr. bullets to help with the velocity......

I agree with Terry that H4350 should be your first choice. H4831 SC will also work in a slightly compressed load. Either should get you above 3000 at reasonable pressure in 32".

Great......

Does R-17 have any place in this sceneario????

I have a little of it, as well as some H4350.

Just as a reference; my Shehane usually tunes at ~2940 fps in 32" with 180 Hybrids and H4831 SC. Cases last 7-9 firings. I just ran the same pressure levels in QL with 162 A-Max. They are above 3050 with either H4350 or H4831 SC. [br]
I would avoid Reloder 17 for F-Class. It is double base, temperature sensitive and has a nasty pressure trait due to its deterrent infusion.

I'm pushing the 162gr Amax with 57.5gr-H4831sc - F210m - OAL @ 3.175 which is right at the lands. This load is shooting sub moa out to 1000 yds. 284 win 30" Max HV Kreiger 8.5 tw, 311 nk.

There are contradictory views on Re17 here in the UK in the 284 and Shehane. I agree with you. I've seen too many 284s that shoot brilliantly one day with it, then 'go off' and badly at that for no obvious reason on another. We rarely worry too much about temperature here, but even so it seems to be temperamental in this application.

Our problem is the absence of H4831 and there is no relief promised so far. We may or may not get spotty supplies of the IMR version in the future. Nitro-Chemie (which manufactures Re17) is just about to launch its range of RS (Reload Swiss) powders in the UK and that may provide some options. RS62 is a single-base version of RS60 (Re17) with a slightly slower burning speed, and RS70 is an added nitroglycerin 'high-energy' powder with a similar burning rate to H4831.

Going back to the OP's question, I've not loaded my 284 with the 162 A-Max, but used and had very good results from the older 168gn Berger VLD. IMR-4831 suits it very well and I don't see any reason why it won't work equally well in the Shehane.
