Kinda of an oxymoron!I'm building a long range/tactical Using a nice used Obermeyer barrel (~600 down the tube). Smith will recut the tenon and move the chamber forward. I want a match chamber, how do I do this without spending a wad on a one use tool. I'm not cheap but frugal on this build.
It is a Rem 700 LA was 7mm Mag.What bullet do you intend to use? Most reamers that are made for the 175-180 grain bullets have a .187 (or there abouts) throat length to seat the bullet above the neck/shoulder junction. That renders the cartridge unusable in a short action magazine that a lot of tactical shooters use. What action do you have?
I plan on using 180 g Bergers with necked up 6.5-284 Lapua. Again action is from 7mm Mag Rem 700 LA.What bullet do you intend to use? Thanks for the response, I appreciate your opinion, not sure what you find oxymoronic. Long range/Tactical? I do come here for professional advice and counsel.Kinda of an oxymoron!
That makes quite a lot of sense. Thank you.You can always sell your reamer and the loss you take if you do lose will be cheaper than renting one. Plus you can get exactly what you want where thats doubtful with a rental
Smith said his reamer is standard .284 Win and not what I need for the 180 g Bergers.Find a smith with the reamer you want. Most worth their salt will have more than one 284 reamer.

I believe you will have to get the bolt face reduced. You are talking a mag bolt face to a rebated rim. Probably have to put a Sako extractor in. MattI plan on using 180 g Bergers with necked up 6.5-284 Lapua. Again action is from 7mm Mag Rem 700 LA.
Good question, I'm afraid I don't know. Smith didn't raise that issue.Doesn't your smith have a throating reamer? Will your bolt pull the 284 brass?
Again, good observation. The .284 is about .062" smaller.I believe you will have to get the bolt face reduced. You are talking a mag bolt face to a rebated rim. Probably have to put a Sako extractor in. Matt
Good input, this is my first build and I'm sure I'll learn a lot.Your bolt will definitely require bushing and a new extractor. Shouldn't be too expensive. Cheaper than a new bolt I'd think.
