284 hunting rifle......

Originally was going to use a Sako Action. Jim advised a Rem 700 , alittle lighter, stainless, could install Jewell trigger in future......
The T3 has a good OEM trigger. No need for an aftermarket. Just replace the factory trigger spring with a lighter one and you are GTG. But, if ya gotta do it, a B&A is available for the T3.

Im likely to build a 284 hunting rifle on the T3 myself. I’ll use a Manners stock.

Did you build this rifle? I'm considering the same thing. Please tell me about it. 8 twist?
Thanks
Yes I did. It's a 284 built on a Tikka T3 long action. I had my gunsmith face the receiver and put a pinned Rem recoil lug on it. I put in the after-market trigger spring as GSPV suggests. Its got a Krieger #4.5 in 8.5 twist finished at 25-inches. I am shooting 175 ELDX's with RL23 at 2810 fps. I used a B&C medalist stock. I hogged-out for the lug and bedded it. Its super solid.

It shoots 0.30 moa for 5 shots all day long. The only issue I had was the magazines. The 284 is just a little too fat for the long action plastic Tikka mags. After 20 minutes with a chisel and sand paper, I was able to scrape enough out of the mag to get them to reliably feed all five rounds.

I have had two Savage Max-1 rifles in 6.5x284. Still have one, sold the other to finance another purchase. Both are very accurate with 140 Bergers. Too bad Savage made them in a 24" tube instead of a 26". As far as aftermarket stocks, I am not aware of a replacement for the Accustock rifles.

This one is in 7x47 L. I plan to use it as a guide, but go with a lighter stock, long action blind mag, in 7 Walker.

When Manners says that these are drop in, they mean it. This one isn't bedded, uses the T3 style lug. The receiver was faced a bit to remove the bevel. That's it. Shoots very well.

Nice. What bottom metal are you using?

Heck, I’ll have to look it up. It’s some company out of FL, I think. You can get the stock and bottom metal through them and they install it at no cost.

CBI, maybe? Something like that.

My old Ruger77 with the tang safety got rechambered to 7X57AI in 1968. It really liked Old style Nosler's, 55gr. H4350. 50+ Caribou later, I found someone who wanted it a lot. I kinda miss that gun.
I was going to AI my 7x57 Ruger 77, but never did. It killed everything I ever shot at, and now I want to keep it original. I never could get 140's or lighter bullets to be as accurate as the 150's and heavier, so I just gave up. Actually, I don't see any need for them.
Longbow, Perfect sense in rifle and cartridge! Barlow

Good looking rigs pictured. I have never owned a 284 but have always thought it would my a great hunting round for me. I would still like to get one some day.

Man all that Mauser talk almost get my eyes leaking. I love the old 98s. I have one I put a cheap 7X57 barrel on years ago. Shoots well enough for hunting. I built it for one of my sons to hunt with. I remember when you could by those pretty cheap but not so any more

Aren't all T 3 recievers long action?

That's what I thought, so the only effort is in the magazine when seating a longer projectile and getting them to feed, is that about right?
My inquiry results from thought of converting my T3 308 to something larger for Montana hunting.

That’s correct. You can go with a long action mag, and shoot 284s seated long. As best I can recall from reading other folks posts that did it, will be a couple of other small tweaks.

It's probably cheaper just to grab a used 7 mag from a pawn shop and put on a decent scope.

Cheaper in the front but more costly loading due to the 30+% powder capacity with very little return in performance. Recoil is also 30+% more in the 7 mag. If shooting the 195s I'd say yes go 7 mag. The 284 win is a dream to shoot with 160-180s. Very accurate and a great hunting rifle for most north American game. Having both a long and short action 284 I can say the long action is better suited for the 180+ and short action for the 168 down. I do believe I prefer my short action platform better as I shoot the 162-168 class bullets with better all around success.

Great cartridge today with a lot more versatility that when it came out. Bullets, powder and brass as well as load data for both platforms are endless. Understandingly if you don't shoot competition at 1000 yards many or even most guys will not shoot one. I do not shoot competition. I use both of mine for hunting rifles and to shoot long range steel. Almost ready for a new barrel on the LA rifle. I used my 7 mag on an elk hunt last time I hunted elk with a rifle but the next elk hunt it will be replaced by the SA 284.
