284 Damn close call! 4198 in for 4831SC

Anyone venture a guess as to what would happen if you touched off 55 grains of 4198 behind a 162 grain A-max in a 284 Shehane?

I was in a hurry this afternoon and I grabbed the wrong powder without noticing. I loaded up probably 30 rounds as above. Fortunately, I did not get to those in my fireforming and I just noticed I had the wrong powder in the hopper.

Time to pull bullets!

You may have needed the best brain surgeon in the country to extract a bolt from inside your head! You, my good man, are VERY fortunate to have "found" your problem before it "found" you!! WHEW!!!

We all make mistakes. The key is, how are you going to prevent it from happening again?

Thanks for your post. It's always good when we learn that very serious errors can be made when we're engaged in this reloading activity. Extremely happy to learn you recognized the problem in time to escape a potentially fatal mistake.
Hope your warning encourages others to triple check each step in the reloading routine.

+1

Always good to see a post that re-emphasizes the importance of safety. If you think about it, we are all making bombs! Pretty dangerous stuff.

Thank goodness you caught that!

And good on you for sharing that with us ........... many wouldn't ...... but in doing so, you put the rest of us on notice ......

When it comes to reloading and guns in general ...... check and recheck!!

Three 44s

made that mistake .........No more 4198 allowed in the cabnet ..... I bet my bullet was doing 6000 + FPS . Remington 700s are strong !

I'm as cautious as they come. I wright on the jug with a bold marker what rifle the powder is used for. So when it comes out of the cabinet, I see the powder number and the rifle caliber.

We're human, we make mistakes. The root idea is to learn from those you survive I suppose, maybe try to pass along what you've learned to others so they might avoid a similar situation.

I store pistol and rifle propellants separately. When setting up for a seating session I select the powder I want to use & bring it to my bench before making sure all the other components are properly selected and arranged.

Then before loading my Harrell's I check the powder container one more time. I have several bottles for the Harrell's, each is labeled with the propellant it's used with, along with notes about "clicks" for the loads that propellant is used in.

Once I'm done what's left over goes back into the bottle it came from, then that goes back to its place on the appropriate shelf.

..reminds me of the commercial back in the early 70's I watched as a kid...

Guy is driving along, probably in his 40's....talking about how he has been driving for 25 years..all experienced...in the next instant he has a momentary lapse of concentration.

BANG...Head On Collision.....

YES...you are only as good as your last reload.....
