280Ai

Kenny Jarret from S C worked with this caliber for some time and built some fine beanfield rifles. Sierra has load data listed in their last manual for the cartridge. Some touted it to be as effective as the 7 Rem Mag.
I had one of his. I loved that rifle up until somebody stole it from me. It was my first custom rifle and was re-barreled from a .257 AI. I was a total novice then or I would have kept the .257 barrel.

If I had a 280AI I would surely want to try one of the new Hammer Hunter Tipped bullets in it. They shoot pretty well and are not temperamental when working up a load.

I have a Cooper M52 in 280 AI with 24", 1:9 ?Wilson barrel. I've worked up 160 gr Accubonds and 142 gr Hammer Hunters with H4831sc. Both shoot <1/2 MOA all day long. Love it!

H4831SC seems “promising” but I’m new to the 280ai world…..

180 hybrids/vlds/scenars
2800fps at 200msl is easy with H4831 or IMR 7828ssc.
Don’t waste your money on Nosler brass, primer pockets started getting loose after 3 firings. The Peterson brass I bought before the Nosler is still going strong.

If you end up liking the Barnes, try Hammers or Cutting Edge.
You'll LOVE them!!

Lots of people seem to like the Barnes.
Personally, I won't use them.
I've seen 3 deer shot broadside with a Barnes. We recovered one.
And that one was over 600 yards away. Thank goodness for snow!
Ive hunted with barnes for 3 decades in a number of rifles including 280ai. Taken deer out to 400 and never lost a deer and none went more than 20-25 yds. All bled heavily and lungs looked like a blender blade went thru them. I went to hammers when barnes became scarce a few years ago. Excellent bullet but went back to barnes recently. I preferred a bullet that retained its weight and the hammer sheds up to 40% of its weight when the petals break off.

That's like saying that you like a FMJ because it retains it's weight over a Berger VLD that you only find the jacket under the offside hide.

You are right Nosler brass is a waste of money. I have some that on one firing primer pockets are loose and after reloading and firing second time leaking.

I picked up a Browning X-Bolt Speed in 280ai two (2) years ago.

24" Barrel
1:8 Twist

Peterson Brass, IMR7828SCC, CCI LR, & ELD-X 162gr

Couldn't be happier with the rifle. It's pretty much been my go to now. Lots of guns just sitting in the safes now that I have this rifle.

Accurate & Excellent Velocities with less powder than many comparable chamberings. What's not to like.

I helped a friend do just that and the Hammers shot pretty well. I'm sure they'll be DRT in the field.

No it isnt. They both expand but one sheds weight
Ok then ...

I guess that was an extreme case.

So, the Partition is known to shed weight. The nose is known to expand and possibly shed, yet the shank continues on.

This would be the lead core version of the Hammer or Cutting Edge.

Yet nobody ever doubts the terminal performance of a Partition.
One of the most popular bullets for big game.

I bought a new Browning Xbolt Speed Long Range 280AI. Mine is still in the box. I will be the same way. I usually use a 280 rem. Hard finding any Peterson brass. Would I be better off using new Remington 280 rem brass? I start up load development. Using Hornady ELD X 175gr and M 180 gr bullets. I also bought some ELD X and M in 162 gr.

Eurooptic has 500 count Peterson in stock. You could take what you need and sell the rest here.

What I have found out about Nosler brass. Nosler brass is made for .280 Remington Ackley Improved reamer which is SAAMI specs . The 280 Remington Ackley Improve is 14th shorter than P.O. Ackley 280 Remington. To use Nosler brass your barrel needs to be chambered with their reamer and use a die for their brass. If you have the 14th longer chamber, which is P.O. Ackley, you need a resizing die from this chamber. Remington 280 brass is 25Th longer and when you fire form it becomes 10th shorter which calls for a different resizing die. Your Remington 280 brass is 25TH LONGER than Nosler brass.
