I have a 280 AI I'm going to start shooting, fresh rifle with a 1in9 twist and a 24 inch tube. I want to shoot 168 Berger VLD hunting bullets. However I plan on taking it to Africa for a plains game hunt and the guide won't allow those bullets. He typically won't allow anything less than 30 cal on the bigger antelope, Eland, Kudu and such. However he said he would go for the 7mm with the traditional bullets, Partitions, A frames, Barnes and such.
I was going to start with 4831sc and partitions but would appreciate any other recommendations.
Where are you hunting? This will determine your load direction. Since you mentioned Kudu and Eland, two of the tougher (heavy shoulder) that often hang in the bush its important to know the terrain you will be hunting. If its eastern cape where you can pick a shot and slip it in the ribs is much different than other areas where you might have a split second to take a shot.
Do you plan on letting a trophy walk if its not an ideal shot? if the answer is no than pick a Cal., Cartridge and bullet that can penetrate end to end from shoulder to rump or rump to shoulder. If it bleeds you pay for it. There are a few animals you will want to stay off the shoulder with almost all 7mm bullets.
