Just picked up a new hunting rifle from a friend of mine. It is a Parker Ballard 300 weatherby my friend bought it new way back in the day and kinda forgot he had it. while going through the safe he dug it out and long story short It is mine now. Gun has a 26" heavy barrel 12 twist and it is mauser action. He remembered loading 180's in it but can't remember bullets or powder??? I shot some 150 grain weatherby brand ammo nosler partitions and they didn't group at all for me. I have never played with this cartridge and am gonna start loading something tomorrow. I am a big berger bullet fan so if anyone has any suggestions I would really appriciate it. I was thinking 190's but am very open to anything.

i loaded some for a friend before a Yukon trip, he used the 165 Nosler part and i used 4831 in the mid to upper 70gr range, but can not remember the exact load, they shot very well out of his weatherby. it was a good one shot taker.

in my mark V I'm using 180 accubond bullets , with 87.8 grains of H1000 , Fed 215 primer . 3170 FPS . it's getting close to a max load so work up to this .another powder to think about is IMR7828 it was showing good promise for me , I need to give it a good honest try . Jim

Anyone have any exsperience with these guns?? I know it has the freebore, but is this barrel even worth trying to get to shoot or just rebarrel it and move on.

dragman:

Don't know about the 300 Weatherby, but I have a Parker Ballard in 30-06 that shoots MOA or better (3 shot groups) with no real load development. I would suggest at least giving the barrel a fair trial before replacing it.

I will try some different loads and give it a chance before I just take it off. thanks for the info.

A lot of the 300's don't really do very well with 150gr bullets even if it a 12 twist which I find strange as most would be 10 twist. Almost any 180or more will shoot well. Look at some loads for RL-17 & it will run without too much pressure. If you want something super fast/flat,try the Barnes 130 gr ttsx. They shoot pretty decent out of my 300's. One is a 10 & the other is a 12 twist. They will handle moose no sweat. The 180's will normally have an edge on accuracy in a hunting bullet. The exception could be a Berger.

Neet gun, its going to be a gamble wether it will shoot, went through every trick in the book with one and could not do better that 2 MOA. As for the Bergers I have shot the 175 and 190's. Current load is h4831sc, 190 grn Hunting VLD and CCI mag primer. h4831 has been a great go to powder for me in this caliber.
