280 Imp. for F-Class

I seem to recall that a 280 won F-open at the Nationals this yr, I know that Jeff Cochran was campaigning one last yr. It can certainly be competitive.

You are correct, David Baley (same one who Zilla mentionned above) won the 2012 F-Open National Championship with a .280 Remington. I don't believe it's "improved" in any way, well except for Dave's phenomenal shooting of course.

I remember reading about David Bailey here a few months back.

As far as the powder, I have not done extensive testing with this rifle, but I am currently running H4831sc. I can't recall the charge at the moment, but it has given me the best groups to date. I'm going to buy a better scope and do some load development over the winter and I should be able to dial it in.

I forgot to mention y X count was 17x out of 400 so It's getting there. I believe I got 9X at the 600 yard line. The last match was with a good 15-20 mph wind so it's always fun shooting in ND!

I've got a few of these and they work out extremely well for me. Most of them are hunting/paper punchers.

One thing to keep in mind is the amount of work I put into this action to make it what it is, is way beyond what it would cost to have it done by someone else. I enjoy working on them and it's rewarding, but not cost effective for the average joe. With this one, I welded up the top and bottom so it is basically a tube action now. My trigger is tuned down to about 4 oz. I also trued everything up and modified the firing pin to lighten it and speed it up a lot. The pin only travels about 1/4" now where it was almost 3/4" stock. I slicked up the action so it is smooth as glass and functions flawlessly. I am also a big fan of the cone breech and the canted lugs which allow for nice tight fitting brass and easy extraction even with hot loads.

Spitfire

I just looked at my Free bore on my Reamer print. Its pretty short at.090. Looks like a Uni Thoater will be in order. Do you know what your freebore is on your chamber?

Also shooting in Grandforks cant be that bad... with all the tree's around....

There are trees in ND?

As for the free bore, I am not sure. It is a standard .280 RCBS chamber, no neck turn. However I do clean up the necks a little to make them uniform. I'll do some checking on the freebore question.

Using Rem. brass, oh my.

I think people get too wrapped up in brass. I shoot W-W, no way I'm paying the prices for Lapua. Sure it's better, but does it make a difference on the target, I can't see it. Danny Biggs shot the Open record 200 11X, or something like that using R-P brass.

200-15X, twice in two days. [br]
I've obtained good results with Remington 6mm Rem brass but culled a significant percentage for various reasons. Overall, it was still relatively less expensive than Lapua or Norma brass in other calibers. I do get better case life from Lapua and Norma than Winchester or Remington. The domestic brass can shoot just as well when properly prepared.

FWIW, David Bailey, captain of The Long Shots team, shot a .280 at the 2011 F-Class Nats.

AND WON IT

Not in 2011. The Lonshots won the team match in 2011 and 2012. David won the individual in 2012.

That is correct, as a team we have had an awesome couple of years. Over the last three years, at some point all of our team members have finished in the top ten as individuals at the Nationals.
Mr Gosnell was the high Longshot in 2011 with an outstanding top 3 finish.

I have really been trying to get someone to give a good solid number on Freebore needed for the 180 class in the 280 AI.

Any one?

Dave Kiff recommends .188" for the 180 Hybrid. The 180 VLD is more like .220".

Thanks Steve.

Looks like my Reamer is .090 and quite a bit short for those long bullets. Guess a Thoating Reamer is in order. Best get one on order from Dave.. I hear there backed up a little bit.

You might do fine with the .090" freebore, Russ. The .188" figure is to optimize the powder space. The long .280 neck will likely allow proper seating. In any case, using standard brass reduces the "doughnut" problem.

.

Mr. Kiff, sorry to highjack, but what is the number of the best reamer to go with the .284win and Berger 180gr. Hybrid?

Thanks,

LRCampos.
