280 case shot in 270

At the range today doing some range patrol (not a drill sargent) Was talking with some of the shooters. One guy shooting a 270 was leaving his brass on ground. I picked up and saw it actually was headstamped 280. So evidently he sized a bunch of 280 down to 270. I saw his groups and they were pretty nice. Question for you guys is.... Could a problem have arisen here? He did not have any tight extractions or anything odd and again his 100 yard group was good for deer.... thank you, JIm

If he F/L sized the brass in a .270 die he was safe.

The only thing I could see that could happen is when you neck down, the neck walls get ,001 thicker. That means a loaded round would be .002 bigger. In some guns it could be a bit tight. Matt

Years ago I bought a box of Federal hunting rounds in 270. When I went to use the ammo, there was a 280 round in the mix. At the store the ammo was on a self where anyone could pick it up. I wondered if someone might have switched a round on purpose. Happy I found it before I tried to shoot it.

It wouldn't have chambered, with it's longer shoulder. But might have jammed in the throat when you tried to chamber it. Could have ruined a day's hunt until you had access to a cleaning rod.
