280 AI POWDERS??

Have a lightweight hunting rifle with a 25" barrel in this cartridge and was wanting to run some 140's out of it. Was wondering what powders would work well with this bullet weight....any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hodgdon's extreme line of powders is very popular, due to their insensitivity to temperature changes.

Personally I'm using H1000, but that's with heavy 180 grain bullets. It's probably too slow for the 140's. Next faster powder is H4831, which might work depending on your bullet and OAL, would probably be close to a full case at near max load. You could also try H4350 as the next faster powder still (if you can get any). It's got an excellent reputation for accuracy.

I have used RL22 in 2-280AI's with 140's. The knock on this powder is it's unstable, both are used for hunting and my load developement were in winter likemy hunting conditions. May want to give the new RL23 a try.

I and my son had one each he preferred h4350 with 140 and I h4831

both gave 3200 from 26" with .300 accuracy out of 700' trued hart bbls.

I have had good luck with H4831SC with 180's based on that I might start with H4350 for 140's, just based on thinking substantially lighter bullet so use a faster powder.

I had 2 Borden built 280 AI`s and also chose the 140 weight, the powders in both rifles that shot best was N165. I told Jim about that powder, he tested it in a customers build and told me that recipe was what he was going to suggest to each 280 AI customer. It works great. I tested AA3100, RL19, RL22, H4831, IMR4831, IMR4350.
