280 Ackley Imp new build and new to forum

Good evening
Ive just joined and just picked up my new build 280 AI
26” barrel, 8.5 twist, mounted to a 700 Action and bedded in a Greyboe Ridgeback


short term goals:
-dialing up accurate load using 150-180 gr bullets
-700 yd tight groups
-get on target at 1000 yds

long term goals
-tighten up 1000yd groups
-1500 yd on target
-learn for next build

If there is a thread with some accurate info on obtaining the correct dies (I’m looking to buy some) and some good beginning load data I would be grateful-thank you and ive really enjoyed reading info on here!

Any direction or suggestion is also greatly appreciated.

The search engine is your friend, Redding has a good read on dies between the 2 - 280AI reamers

Yep, first thing you need to know is which reamer your gunsmith used and let redding know. They can set you up with the correct FL bushing die youll need. Or you can send the reamer print or a few multiple times fired cases to whidden and get a fl bushing die made.

I use a Redding full length S-type bushing die with either a .308 or .309 bushing,depending on the brass.I seat the bullets with a L.E. Wilson seater die.I've had great results with IMR 7977 and IMR 7828 powder.Other powders have also worked well.Mine's not a picky eater.It's a great round.My 280AI has a 26 inch varmint contour barrel,and it's really good for 1,000 yard steel.I shoot bullets in the 160-171 weight range,with the 168 grain Berger Classic hunter for long range deer hunting and the 160 grain Sierra Tipped Matchking for target work.

If I remember correctly the improved 40deg die is for the P.O. Ackley reamer and the improved is the .014 saami shorter reamer.

Yep, I did 280AI that was in Sierra manual #5 and Nosler maunal back then so wasn't (true) AI. I late did spec 280AI.
