Thinking about getting a 28 nosler to replace barrel on my 25-06 savage. I have a few savage varmint and benchrest Savage target actions so familiar with swapping barrels. 28 nosler seems to be a good choice for 400 max 500yd whitetail. Have been using 25 and 6.5 x 47..
28 Nosler 175 gr bullet interest me. What yall thank either that or I have set of dies for 30-06 ackley

The only guy i know that had one, by the time he found a good load( i think after 20 rounds) his throat was eroding. Ive read that its a very bad barrel burner. He ended up pulling off the barrel and went to 7 mag.

The nosler cartridges are my favorites. If you like a 7mm the 28nos is my first choice. Im more of a 30 or 33 man myself though. I guess you know youll have to change your bolt head and if i was doing it i wouldnt use a small shank savage. Id use a large shank or another action preferrably.

28 nosler soon to be a lost climber to anybody in western australia. As it's classed as a Very Powerful Firearm. Coming into the category as 338 lapua and firearms up to 50 bmg and 55boys but ammo hasn't been available for a boys for nearly 60 years . Thanks to our wonderful police department

It has impressive ballistics for sure and most likely short barrel life. But for a hunting rifle, the latter should not be an issue if you are not going to do a lot of range shooting.

If you have the skill to make a humane shot at a deer at those distances, then I believe the 28 Nosler should do really well. With modern cartridges and distance correction scopes, long range successful shots are becoming more prevalent. The 28 Nosler fits into that category.

Personally, for open field deer hunting, I would pick a 270 Win and load it with 130 grain bullets, but I wouldn't attempt a shot at those distances because I do not have the skill to make a humane shot at those ranges.

Here's my 2 cents, I wouldnt build one unless just hunting was the goal with a 195 and freebore to fit.
If i wanted lighter bullets 280AI, 7 mag or 7 saum

I have a Kelbly's Atlas with a benchmark barrel chambered in 28N. It's a good round beyond 500 yards. In 2021, took a blesbok at 831 with a Berger 168 VLD. Easy to tune with RL33. Nine twist is good up to the 180s

Curious as to how that bullet performed. It shoots lights out in my 7mm Remmag but I have yet to kill an elk with it since switching from 150 gr Nosler solid base.

Have you given any thought to the new 7 PRC?? For a 4-500yd deer rifle and staying with the .284/7mm caliber I'd go 7 PRC over 28 Nosler and considering you are using a standard bolt face Savage the easiest swap and still have very good components would be just a straight 284.

A straight 284 would be just a simple barrel swap using the same bolt head and isn't so overbore as a 28 Nosler so you wouldn't need a whole lot of barrel length and if you wanted to run something with a 22-24 inch barrel a 284 or even the 7mm PRC IMO is a much better choice.

Yep, Reloder 33 is the ticket!
My 26" is pushing 175 Elite Hunters at 3195 av at it's best accuracy.

I shoot cold bore shots and maintained .4 to .6 moa average for almost 600 rounds with no end in sight. I measure throat erosion frequently and haven't lost .018" in way over 500 rounds. THIS IS NOT A CARTRIDGE TO FIRE 10 SHOT STRINGS IN 100° JULY SUMMER SUN.
Keep it clean, keep it cool and it is a great cartridge.
Also, it kills with great authority.

No one wants to tell you, don't do it.
But with what you have and what you want to do with it,
there are better choices.
But if you just got to have a 28 Nosler then go for it.
We've all had a caliber(s) we thought we couldn't live without,
then you shoot it and say, ok been there done that and don't
need to do it again. You will learn some on the way.

If your going with 7mm and keeping shots on game under 500 yards there are other options.

7mm-08, 280 Rem, 280AI, 284 Win.

If you just want the 28 Nosler (and nothing wrong with that!), bear in mind your going to need to change the bolt face and change up the magazine for that cartridge.

Watch some of the old Gunwerks videos on Youtube and draw your conclusion.
It's the bullet they exclusively used before partnering up with Hornady on their 7mm LRM.

Stay off the shoulder and they should be DRT or within a few yards.

Last fall I bought a Christiansen Arms in 28 Nosler. I have shot a 7mm Mag for 30+ years. I have not shot any factory rounds from the CA. I ordered dies the day I bought the rifle. I shoot Berger 168 VLDs and for a hunting rig it worked out perfectly. Clod bore or a group of 3 its a very precise 6.5 lb hunting rifle. It only took 15-18 rounds to get dialed in on a great hunting load. I was going to shoot 175gr from it but it shoots the 168s so nice I stopped there.
I have taken a couple of moose over the years with a Berger 168 VLD so I dont know that I need any other option for a great hunting bullet.

True enough and was one of the problems with Winchester’s 264 WM. That and using them to shoot gophers and turning the barrel cherry red. Used to minimize those issues the 264 will last a long time I I suppose so wouldn’t the 28 nos
