270W Ackley improved. .270 fans, come on in.

Anybody shooting a 270w improved?
How about a .270 fast twist barrel running the 160grn+ stuff?

Chime in if you have either one, all the details are welcome.

Just bought some N.O.S. CH 270w improved dies off ebay for an ok price. I already had new brass and a decent stash of .277 pills. Heaviest are 145eldx.
Not sure if I want to go with the 160gr+ stuff and a faster twist.

Any constructive input is welcome. Thanks.

A 140 gr. Berger Classic Hunter, punched thru BOTH Shoulder Blades & Hides of, a small Bull Elk,..
Ka-Pow,.. Hooves in Air with, a 1-10 twist, Tikka in .270 WSM at, 3,173 FPS average Velocity ( Shot was at, 115 yards )
The 140 Berger, is still going OVER,.. 2,000 FPS at, 800 Yards ( Plenty enough "Range", for where I hunt Elk )
You'll get another, couple Hundred yards out of, the 165's -170's in the 1-8 twist .270 imp.
But personally, I'd build,.. a 7 MM Magnum of, some sort,.. for the "Better" BC's
If I wanted / needed, "More" Range, I'd go, 7 PRC with,.. 175 gr Elites / ELD-X's,.. like My son did.
My 2 Cents

7mm gives you better bullet selection, but since you have some components already I think you'll be happy with the 270 AI. There was a guy on LRH that had one and really liked it. It's not much different from the 280 AI which is an excellent cartridge. I had a 270 WSM built a while back, and kinda regret my decision to go with a 1:10" twist (and a .277 caliber, lol) The rifle is very accurate but I wish I had gone with a 1:9 or maybe 1:8.5 so I could stabilize some heavier bullets. I shoot 150 grain Nosler BTs at 3100+ and they have served me well. There is just not much bullet selection for the 270s once you go heavier than 150 grains though. Berger makes some and now Nosler, along with some mono metal bullet makers. Depending on what you want to do with it, and what distances you want to shoot, the 145-150 grain bullets might work just fine. The 270 AI doesn't have enough horsepower to really push the heavy bullets fast enough to make a huge difference at long range anyway so 150s might be about perfect.

Is there anyone doing any decent heavy, high BC bullets in .277? I don't see anything rivalling the 7mm offerings yet.

I LIKE, the 140 gr Classic Hunter Berger's and 145 grain Horn ELD-X;'s for,.. Deer, Antelope and Elk.
Keep's, the Recoil DOWN and Muzzle "Jump" reasonably, LOW for,. GOOD Accuracy at, reasonable Ranges !
I believe in Shooting, a LOT of Practice before, ever going,.. Hunting ! ( Low Recoil = Better Shooting ! )
Ever wonder WHY, the 6.5 Creed is, SO Popular ??,.. it's, all about,.. LOW, Recoil & Accuracy !
The .525-.528 BC of these 2, Accurate, .270 bullets with, .270 Ai Velocity, IS,. "Enough" to, 650 yards or, so,.. IMO !
If, Needing, "Bigger / Better" go,.. 7 PRC

My Win always liked 140g best.
Nosler Part though not as great on paper, dumped the energy at all distances.
I'm sure there are others now, but I stopped there.
Today that rifle seems to need a barrel. I see them for sale on here, and chicken out.

The .270 always gets a lot of hate for not having great bullet selection but I have yet to see any animal shot with a 270 that knew the difference between that and a 7mm of some sort or even .30-06 or .300 win. Its just as dead. That being said the Berger 130 classic hunter is a phenomenal bullet and has a BC nearly that of the 140vld and pushed a bit faster.

More to the OPs question. I have only messed with one .270 Ackley and it was brought to me by a guy who had bought an FN Mauser from a pawn shop with an unknown barrel installed with an unknown round count and wanted load development done. Looked to be well done work wise and had a really nice walnut stock that was glass bedded. Accuracy was less than desirable as was velocity but I blame the barrel. It shot the 130 Sierra Game King best over some H4350 but I had to back it down to 2900fps to keep a 5 shot group at an inch. I had velocities over 3100fps with H4831sc but it would shoot minute of barn at that velocity, again I blame the barrel. Owner didn't want to spend the money on a new one so he kept it as is. He ended up killing a really nice Antelope with it at just over 400 yards and was tickled pink.

When I said best terminal performance for me, I was referring to whitetails in Pa hill jack country.
Sure do like reading outside my own turf and look forward to the build.
