.270 Winchester

1911cwp

You don't know what you don't know.
I have about 299 rounds of empty brass in .270 Winchester. Is there any use for these other than reloading in original caliber?

Place this in the "Market Place" section......you'll have exposure to people buying

I do not wish to be impolite, but it is important that you know that the headspaces for the .270 and .280 are different. so there is more to it than necking up, which would leave the shoulder too far back, and create a case with excess headspace. These are links to the SAAMI drawings for both chambers.

If you look carefully you will see that the maximum headspace for the .280 is a little over .051 longer than that of the .270.

270 Win brass is excellent for the 25/06 after trimmed and usually neck turned. Also arguementively is built to stronger pressure standards than other 06 type brass and 25/06 brass. Check SAAMI standards. I've used 270 brass for the 25/06 since before it was a factory cartridge (late 60s) w/ great performance.

i am aware the 280 chamber is longer to the shoulder thanthe 270, when fire forming a 270 case in the chamber howis this different than an AI fire forming or the br improved chambers with the shoulder moved forward?

AIs are designed so that factory brass headspaces at the neck shoulder junction , with a good fit. That feature is really what defines an "improved" design, as opposed to other designs that require some other methods for maintaining headspace for fire forming, like the Gibbs designs. With the Ackley Improved designs, you can safely fire factory ammo, that has bullet seating depths that are well off the rifling, and in the process make AI brass.

You can also blow-out (fireform) double radiused (venturi) shouldered brass (Wby) to a standard straight degree shoulder like a lot of us do to make brass for the 308 Baer from 340 Wby and 300 Wby brass using a stiff 300 Wby load for a good form.

Ackley was smart-back in his day reloading was still considered voodoo and only gunsmiths and crazy experimenters understood it was the conventional thinking so he kinda insured shooters that you could fire the factory cartridge in the wildcat (improved) chamber and then you had the world by the ass and a faster cartridge than your buddies. Ackley actually promoted handloading, special order dies, custom chambering and a lot of things that we consider almost standard procedure today. I think a little bullshit thrown in helped but he did a lot for this community.

If you want to make .280 brass from .270, you can just neck up to .308 first, and then neck down to .280, that will leave enough of a junction to headspace off of for fireforming.
