270 Win for Elk using 130SST/130 Accubond/130 NP

I have shoulder issues and I'm reluctant to use my 300 WM for Elk. I have a Kimber 270 Win and have a pretty good load using 130 NP (3078 FPS) and I realize shot placement is EVERYTHING.... However looking for advice which would be a better bullet 130 Nosler Accubond or 130 Hornady SST for Elk or do I stick it out the 130 Nosler Partition? Thanks for any feedback

If you have a good load with the 130 NP use it.....You won't gain anything with the other choices.

Have you ever tried Barnes LRX bullets,, all copper I haven't lost an elk or Mule Deer or white tail yet to date in last 8 years. My 5 elk and 3 Mule Deer did come with 175gr LRX 300 win mag and well over 20 WTail 127gr LRX 260AI. I really want to take an Elk 260AI one of these years.

I've seen a nosler partition go right through an elk and never opened up. But his second shot did. 3 or 350 yard shot. Guide told him the first one hit but the animal never moved 2nd shot I could take pointer finger and middle finger and stick in the 2 entry holes. After 2nd shot it went 100 yards down the hill. Flopped over. My friend was pretty close to 80 years old shot it off small tree with a broken branch on it. He still thinks to today that nosler partition is the only bullet in the world. Old School

Partition and Barnes x type bullets are considered a necessity with 130 or 150 out of a 270 on Elk where I hunt. At the speeds you’re talking Partition rear core separation does happen on occasion when hitting heavy bone if you’re playing peekaboo in the trees. Barnes will peel the mushroom off and keep going.
I advocate for a Sierra 130 spritzer GK based on 100% Drt elk kills.

I have never chased or tracked an elk shot correctly with a partition.
I cannot say that about other bullets.
The accubond is a dandy, it you plan to stretch it out. inside of 450, a partition is the answer.

I have several older friends that are now hunting elk with 270’s and 280’s for the same reason you mentioned. They all shoot partitions….. a couple learned the hard way.

I shot cow elk with a 243 Winchester, 100g Partitions at 3050 fps, shots were within 150 yds, we were riding mules.

So, with the 270 and 130g Partitions, you will do well. Place your shot well, or do not pull the trigger.

I would go with the Berger classic Hunter myself. People have been been killing Elk with a .270 for a long time. Shot placement is key but I would want a bullet that dumps all of its energy into the animal rather than the ground or tree behind it.

Both the wife and I shoot 270 Win. We have taken many, many Elk with ours. Bulls and cows. Our go to load since the 1970's is 130 Nosler partition. FWIW I took a large Canadien Moose with mine in 88. Using a 160 Barnes.

I've been using Nosler bullets for about 60 years in 300 Win. Mag, 270 Win, and 25-06. Deer, elk or antelope, they won't go far. I have shot through animals with the Nosler, but the animal was still dead. I'm sure with todays technology other bullets work well also, but I'll go with what has worked for me.
