270 THE BEST?

I shoot a 270win its a great rifle love it great Australian game round, but why is it that they dont use it for benchrest shooting. Its such a flat shooting round one of the flatest going around, how come the 308 is so much more popular?

The High Power, F-class and Benchrest shooters over here have been using lots of .223, 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm, as well as .30. Not to mention .338 and .50. .277 is so close to the 7mm's .284 and there are just so many good 7mm match bullets out there I think the bullet manufaturers are only willing to make what sells. The .270 Win. is in the top five hunting calibers though.

It's the same as the .257's... bullet selection is limited, so people choose not to use them. I'm not saying that the current selection of .257 and .277 bullets are junk, they're just not match quality. Berger does make a VLD in .257, which shot great out of my 25-06, but other cartridges, specifically in different calibers (like 6mm, 6.5mm, and 7mm), offer better "performance." I guess it comes down to personal preference, and your definition of "performance." If you're shooting for minute-of-hog (groundhogs), then a .270 will take care of business. If you're shooting for a 0.1xx" group to win a 100yd match, then the .270 is a poor choice, based mainly on the lack of production of "match-grade" bullets. Brass selection is another component that may take away from selecting the 270 as a match cartridge.

Although, I do believe that almost any cartridge can win a match. Rifle components (actions, barrels, triggers, etc...) are of extreme quality, if you're willing and able to pay for them. If you put the money into a custom gun, chambered in a .270, you could probably do well in a match, provided you found a bullet that's capable of shooting a screamer group consistently :o

Well said Queen_Stick. I have seen many whitetails fall to the .270 in 25yrs. of hunting. But you summed it up perfectly.
