260 Remington deer loads

With an 8 Twist, you should be able to run a 140grain.

My daughters 8 twist loves 140 Berger VLD Hunting with 45 grains of H4350. The OAL is pretty long(required long action) but is shoots very good. I think the OAL is 2.947".

Just my thoughts,
Jim

Well congratulations you have about as good a deer round as there ever was in my humble opinion. Though your 8 twist will handle the 140 class bullets well, I've had my best results on deer with 120 thru 130 Grain bullets. My current rifle likes Hornady 129 SST's, Hornady 129 interbonds, and Nosler 130 Accubonds. They all are accurate and do a good job on deer so I go mostly with the cheaper SST's. My load behind these is rather mild--43.0 Gr H4350 with a Federal 210Match primer. I gave up on Remington brass because the primer pockets open so quickly. Lapua brass lasts a long time. I've also had good luck with necking down Winchester 7/08 brass.

Go fill your freezer!

Thanks guys. The rifle is a model 16 Savage with a 22" barrel and should be here some time next week. I bought a couple boxes of Federal Premium 120 Nosler Ballistic Tips to get me started.

I had shoulder surgery almost three years ago and still can't take much recoil on it. I've been hunting deer with my model 70 in 30-06 since 1977 and almost feel like I'm cheating on my wife buying a new rifle.

If you are not shooting long range(300 and under), the 129g Hornady Sp is a tough bullet to beat in the field! You will get great penetration on quartering shots, to and fro with this bullet. Accuracy is great also. Complete penetration on broadside shots even when you hit the shoulders(which does not happen with the Berger 130).

For anything close (300yds) I would use the 125 gr, part. from there on out I would use a 130 gr. berger, but hey that's me.......The pigs and antelope I have shot with 130 gr. bergers were DRT from 200 - 665 yds. And I know its not the popular choice here , but Use Reloder 17 and have had no issues except it being fast and accurate.... Way fast and very accurate.

hey Justin,
I am using 120gr sierra pro hunters, 39gr of imr 4064, wolf primer, LC formed brass. brass is fully loved, and rounds are mag length. getting 2990 out of a 31" 8 twist and firing pin is bushed by gre-tan. accuracy and speed are right where I need them...brass is not even warm to the touch. I know I could push this harder but don't feel the need. I hope this helps...good luck
cheers,
Doc

120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip over 39.3gr Varget, RP or Nosler brass, CCI-200, 2.79" COAL.

It is a mild load (2800fps from a 22" barrel) but is hell on whitetail, and has shot 0.75MOA or better in three different 260 barrels (26" 1:8, 20" 1:8, 22" 1:9).

You can substitute a 123gr A-Max for the 120 NBT, but the OAL changes a bit for best accuracy.

I built one last year for hunting speedgoats. 26" #5 fluted Brux. B&C Medalist w/bedding block. Weight isn't that bad. I wanted it to be accurate to 600yd, and double as a silhouette rifle. It shoots 1/2 moa at 200yd using 140's and 43gn of H4350. I took an 8 pt whitetail withit last year.

Using these bullets with N160 and Lapua brass.

I used the 120 gr. berger hp boatail in my .260 rem and shot a mule deer at 230 yards and the deer went straight down. I used h4350 powder and the velocity was about 2900 fps the exit hole was about the size of a half dollar. I have about 300 of these bullets and if I shoot all of them I have some 120 gr. smk that I will use.
