260 rem

I am looking at testing a new bullet this year in my 260 rem rifles. I’m testing for combination of reasons. I’m bored and have time to kill. Also would like to test out a “cheaper” bullet. Would just like to have another option for a bullet.
I am currently running 142gr SMK.
I have a Savage 12 LRP 260 rem with 1900 rounds through it and a
F Class Savage custom 260 rem with a 30” Shilen barrel with 700 rounds through it.
I shoot out 1200 yards, but I am not a competition shooter. Both rifles have 1/8 twist.
Powders I have on hand IMR 4350 H4350 H4831 and H4831sc.
Do you guys have any other recommendations for a bullet?

Honestly the142 SMK is one of the best 6.5 bullets ever made and it's what, two or three or even ten dollars more than something "cheaper" and far inferior. If cost is reason for a change then its time to find a different hobby.

My 260AI seems to like this load for a cheaper bullet. 140 gr. Nosler B T 44.0 gr. H-4350 CCI 250M Primer in Starline brass @ .026 off the lands. (DISCLAIMER) You would need to back down to around 40 gr. of H-4350 and work up. MAX. in 260 is 42.0 gr. @ Hodgdon Data Site.

Obviously the 142gr SMK is perfect for the 260 rem.
I built a 100 yard gun range on my property and have plenty of time And money to do some load development for my rifles. I want to try a cheaper bullet mostly for the fun of trying to develop a load to shoot them out to 1200 yards.
You didn’t give me any information based on my question I asked. Thanks.

If you want to waste barrel life, time, money and effort by all means got for it. Makes sense to me to poke holes at 100 with the bullet I intend to poke holes with at 1200. But thats just me I guess.

Thanks Bill I will look into it. It probably won’t be far off the 142gr SMK load setup.

Right. These Nosler bullets sometimes don't like jammed or really close to lands. Hope it works out for you.

My 260s always had a particular liking to the 139 Lapua Scenar. That and the 140 Amax. The Lapua was the best performing bullet. It liked 46.5 grains of H4831sc for 2860fps. This was over a decade ago so I'm guessing some of the RL powders would outperform and maybe even be as accurate.

Not loading the 130 yet since I'm deployed until mid may. Will be trying them out with shooters world long shot is my 26" m70.
I haven’t used shooters world long shot powder before. The 130’s are on the light end of bullet weight I would be willing to try.

I hope you return safe and sound!
