260 Rem Transonic Bullet Selection

Planning a 260 Rem build in the near future and just wondering if anyone has had much experience with how the 142gr Sierra Matchkings deal with going transonic? Im going to run a 28" tube and would like to if possible shoot out to 1 mile.

Thank you for your time and information

Thanks for the reply mate, will look into them too. Ill likely run tests with the 139 Scenars, 142 SMK, 140 Berger LRBT and the 140 ELD-M
Id like to test Hybrids too but Im down in Australia and the Hybrids are like unicorn tears so Ill leave them be and try the more available LRBT's

You mean 1.6km? :)

They are a good bullet and were my go-to when I was a 260 kinda guy. I think they are the best 260 bullet going. 260 is not really a "1 mile" cartridge, despite what the internet says. A 1mph wind change at that distance is +/-22" for me. So wind is gonna be the issue, but it almost always is.

Yeah the old 260 definitely isn't built for shooting out that far which is why Ill try and give myself the best possible chance with a projectile that can handle the transonic period well. Your bang on about the wind too, ill likely only shoot out to 1 mile a couple times a year. Will be shooting 1000yds and in at my local F Class range alot more. You have had good results with the sierra 142 smk's?

Thanks for your time and reply

I have a 260AI and I use it as a mid-range F-Open rifle (300 and 600 yards) with Berger 140 grain hybrids going at 2,980 fps. My experience is that even with a 32" tube it can't keep up with the 7mms at 1,000 yards. I would think it wouldn't improve behind that. YMMV.

Maybe a 7RSAUM would be a better choice, but I can't say because I've never shot that far.

Thanks for your reply mate, I was thinking about the 260 Ackley in this rifle but it won't be a dedicated F Class rifle. Ive got a SA Rem 700 clone action that will run AICS magazines so will sort of be a 70% range and 30% hunting rifle. Looking to put it into a McMillan A3 stock.

Those 7 SAUM'S are a very nice and capable cartridge that's for sure. If I did go 7mm I would consider that heavily.
