260 Rem

Hi All

Im looking for a new caliber to shoot at my local range 300-900 meters. Im interested in the 260 rem and 130gr bergers. Out of a 30" barrel is it possible to reach the 2900-300fps bracket with the standard case or should I look at going to the AI version? Powders I have are H4350 and H4831SC.

Thanks

Brad,
Good caliber choice. I shoot 142SMK's in mine and do not get the velocity you want (2750) however, they are still supersonic at 1K and shoot really well. My rifle likes H-4831 but a lot of competitors do well with 4350

Brad,
You should have no problem getting 2900 to 3000 on the 260 with the 130's.

Thanks guys.

The AI case interests me alot, however getting a dummy case is quite hard here so I can get specs for a reamer build. A standard chamber would be more useful to me but I dont want to drop velocity to the point where it has no advantage over a 308 and 155gr bullets.

Can you tell me also, has anyone ever necked down the lapua palma 308 cases (and probably had to trim and turn the necks a little) to make 260 cases? The small primer of these cases has worked brilliantly for us in our 308's and I wonder if it would be of advantage here as well.

I had a factory Remington VLS with the 26" barrel, and ran the 123 Lapuas at 2930. I see no reason you couldn't match that with 130's in 30".

Currently running a 23" eight twist barrel with the 140 VLD's at 2850 with H-4350 in neck down 308 Lapua brass (not Palma), lightly turned.

I shoot 130 gr. bergers at 3120 with Reloder 17 and have got just over 3000 with H4831 but ran out of room, in a 30" Krieger. Neither powder show any signs of pressure.

Hi Brad, I shoot a standard 260 with 30inch barrel, I get over 2900fps with 139gr scenars, 2975fps with 130gr bergers, and can get 3100fps with 123gr scenars but get the best accuracy from these at around 3031fps, I've had many 5 shot extreme spreads under 10fps, I love this cartridge as it is but I am thinking about the AI version for next barrel, the problem is, it is still shooting great groups even with over 3000 rounds down the barrel.

Thanks guys

Can I also ask what case life is for those running the 140gr bullets at or over the 2850fps mark? It looks like I may just be better off going with the standard 260 rem chamber if its going to work where I want it to.

Dooley- what powder are you using?

Yes, you can do it. I got 2950fps with H4350 and 123gr Scenars in a 24" barrel. That was a moderate to stout loud. You'll find the 130s will shoot a LOT faster than the 140-142gr bullets. The 130s are a good choice and you should end up right at the velocity "sweet spot" with H4350. You may run out of case capacity with H4831. Make sure your chamber is set up to park the bullet bearing surface well above the neck-shoulder junction so you can use full case capacity (I'm assuming you don't have mag-length limitations.) If you can't afford the Berger 130s, don't hesistate to try the Lapua Scenar 123s. Great bullet -- not fussy.

Thanks "Boss" ;D

Looks like im going the standard 260rem.

Anyone got a reamer print that will suit these 130gr bergers?

Brad, I'm gettting 2850 with 142 SMK's H4350 and well over 3100 with 120 Nosler BT's and in the 3000's with 123 sceanrs, 26" McGowan. You should have no problem with the 130 bergers

I do not have a reamer print but i can tell you I use an oal of 2.99" with the 130 gr. berger. Keeps the bullet out of the case but plenty of room to follow the throat for awhile.
