260 reduced loads.

I'm wanting to load up some reduced loads for my son to shoot in a 260 I'm about finished building. Can someone give me a good reduced load for the 260? Thanks, Trent

use h4895 powder, take the max load and use 60%. example 120 gr. bullet 38 gr. is max 38 x60 %= 22.8
you could also use trailboss powder. always great to hear about getting kids out to shoot. have fun, cliffe

My son enjoyed shooting a 300 Win Mag with Trail Boss & 210 gr cast boolits. The 'official' formula from IMR for Trail Boss:

1. Find where the base of the bullet to be loaded is located in the case and make a mark on the outside of the case at this location. Then fill the case to that mark with Trail Boss, pour into the scale pan and weigh. This is your maximum load. Pressures will be below the maximum allowed for this cartridge and perfectly safe to use.

2. Take 70% of this powder charge weight (max load * 0.70), and that is your starting load.

FWIW, I'll be starting my son with 150gr jacketed bullets & Trail Boss next.

Just how mild do you want it?
If you just want to tame it a bit, then H4895 is known to be a good powder with slightly reduced loads. Big bore shooters use it with reduced loads and it handles lower pressure without the light load blow up problem. If you want realy mild, the trail boss will fill your case up a bit more ,is cool burning, doesnt foul bad and can still be quite accurate, even with loads around 1600fps.

I'm wanting to tame it down pretty good. Along the .223 lines. He's almost 5 and is shooting the .223 pretty well (AR-15). I think I'll try some trailboss. Sounds like it should work..

I got my daughter started in her 260 shooting 33.0 grains of IMR 4064 behind a 120 grain Amax. It turned out to be a very accurate load in her 1:9 twist Abolt. She could shoot 5 shot MOA groups with it at 11. If I recall correctly, the MV was about 2250-2300 fps, so it was a pretty mild load.

My daughter killed her first deer when she was 10. The load was 32.0 gr H4895 under a 120 Nosler BT. Velocity was 2360 fps in an 18" barrel. Killed deer really well.

I will also post a load using an 85 gr Sierra and 20.0 gr SR4759. It was a popgun little thing. If I recall the velocity was around 2200 fps. Both loads hit the same point of aim at either 50 or 100 yards (she is 21 now and it is a bit hard to remember.). She would shoot the 85 all summer and then I would load the 120 in her gun for deer season. In her excitement, she never noticed the slight increase in recoil.
