260 powder

My savage should be put together any day, I got some 123 gr a-max to try. What powder do you think i should start with, I have on hand Varget RL 15, H414, H4350, H4831sc. Barrel is a 26 inch 8 twist Shilen. Just opened my brand new redding die set only to find they sent me two FL dies and no seater. >:(

Well, somebody somewhere must have a die set with just 2 seaters... I would choose H4831SC, anytime. Vihta's N560 is also a terrific choice for this round.

I just got done working up loads for a buddies .260 and I had the best results with H4350 behind a 120 sierra pro hunter.

The guy's have given good advice. R-17, 4350 and even Varget with the light bullets works well. 4350 seems to be the general all around powder of choice and it preforms well. I've set several National Records in mid-long range highpower competition using the 260 (I'm sure they've been broken by now) and found when shooting the heavy 140-142 gr bullets in my rifle I get better results and scores with the slower burning 4831sc powder. Since you're shooting a 26" barrel I don't think you can go wrong with 4350.

Good shooting, Jim

Another vote for the H-4350 although the H-4831 has been known to surprise some folks even though it's slower burning. Try the H-4350 first, it will probably turn out to be your best bet.

47.0gr of 4831SC and 123g AMAX gives me 2868 fps while fire forming 260 AI through my 28" Bartlein bbl. It groups 1/2 MOA at 200 yards.

I will be the oddball here and say that I use N160 in mine for XTC Highpower. Easily get to 2,850 with great accuracy.
