260 AI load

With the 140 class bullets, you will need a .165-.170 freebore to adequately handle the longer bearing surfaces. H4350 is or I should say probably is the best powder for that cartridge. H4831SC is also very good. My current load is 43.2grs of H4350 with the Berger 140 Hybrid.. I was shooting the Berger 140 LRBT. It is a FANTASTIC bullet. It has a very short bearing surface and can be easily driven to 2900+ IF you have the longer freebore. If you want to shoot a 140 class bullet, you may want to try one with a shorter freebore. The Berger 140LRBT may very well be the ticket you're looking for. It is extremely easy to tune and VERY accurate. I have never seen a 6.5 cartridge that would not shoot that bullet well.. My "problem" is that I have a .170 freebore and after 800 rounds, the 140LRBT was barely in the case, due to it's short bearing surface, ergo I had to go to the Hybrid.. I was running 43.8grs of H4350 @ 2920f.p.s. with that bullet. So, instead of paying for the use of a unithroater, try the 140LRBT! You may be pleasantly surprised!

What is your barrel life like on the 260AI? Is it 1500 or better?

I am not sure yet! It is my FIRST .260A.I. I have right at 800 rounds on it right now and it is shooting better than ever! But I did have 2 / 6.5 x 284's and based on them, I guess I will get 1600-1800..

Thanks for all the replies. I called PTG and got the reamer print in 5 minutes! But I'm not certain it is correct.. I told her the reamer says 6.5-308 win AI, the print says 6.5-308 (260) Rem AI.. The print shows .113 freebore but I keep trying to measure it and I can't see it..

Stepherm,
Measure your CBTO (base to ogive) using a Hornady gauge and post the numbers. My freebore is .110" and my CBTO with a 139 is 2.314" just touching the lands. Comparing this to your number should give you a good idea of your freebore.

If you don't have a Hornady gauge, post your COAL (base to tip) and I'll measure one of mine for you.

Edited: Mine's a straight 260, not 260AI. Sorry.

Tired of constantly reading where .260 Ackly is not worth the trouble. I went ahead with mine anyway and will now report the end result.

My A5 has a 30 inch Brux barrel with MTU taper. It has a Bat Tactical short action, Jewell trigger, Surgeon bottom metal, AI mags. KMW cheek kit, and a radical tank type brake from JPE called the Recoil Eliminator. Yesterday, my smith shot mine with 45.6 grains of H4350 with Berger 149 HYBRIDS ,052 off the lands, End result was 3 shot group of .268 or .004 over a single bullet hole! Speed estimated till later in the week but expected to be 3020. I only have 50 rounds on the barrel and it STILL has not shown a single trace of copper!

It seems you have a big difference between the Base to ogive and OAL measurement. .721 is a big difference. That is almost 3/4 inch. Matt
