.260 ACKLEY...IMPRESSIVE!!!

RIFLE SPECS ARE A SAVAGE 10 TARGET ACTION, 30" CRITERON BARREL , SSS RECOIL LUG AND BARREL NUT, CHOATE ULTIMATE VARMINT STOCK...ONLY USE TWO SCREWS ON THE TARGET ACTION . I INSTALLED A 3" WIDE , 1" THICK 12" LONG STEEL PLATE ON THE FOREND, STEEL PLATE AND 1" ROUND BAR STOCK ON THE REAR WITH LEAD SHOT FILL IN THE STOCK...TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE GUN IS 38 LB WITH A SIGHTRON 8-32 -56 SIII WITH LR MOA RETICLE.....GUN IS THIS HEAVY AS I WANTED TO BE ABLE TO SEE BULLET IMPACT AT HIGH POWER WITH A SMALL FOV...IN THAT REGARD IT WORKS WELL.. OBVIOUSLY ITS ONLY SHOT FROM A BENCH. I WANTED TO SHOOT 123 AMAX ...DOES NOT LIKE THEM AT ALL...140 AMAX? BETTER BUT NOT GREAT. WANTED TO SHOOT THE A MAX IN HOPES OF EXPANSION AT 1 K ON GROUND HOGS BUT, NO DICE..BERGER 140 VLD...WET MOLY COAT...WIN .308 BRASS NECKED DOWN, ANNEALED AND NECKS CLEANED UP TO .014......RELOADER 22, WOLF LR PRIMER. MV RIGHT AT 3000F/SEC..THATS WHERE THE NODE IS ON THIS COMBO...300 YARDS .75 GROUPS....CAN PUSH THEM TO 3100 BUT THATS ON THE RAGGED EDGE AND TOUGH ON BRASS...NO NEED TO...LAST NIGHT FIRST TIME OUT....FIRST G HOG AT 680..DRILLED......SECOND AT 947...HIT...CRAWLED A FEW YARDS THEN TAIL SPIN AND DONE.....SHOT AT A FEW ROCKS OUT TO 1200 ON THE SIDE OF A WELL ROAD...GOOD HITS AND LOTS OF BULLET SPLASH.. I HAVE SHOT ALOT OF CARTRIDGES OVER THE YEARS..... STANDARD AND WILDCAT........ WHILE ITS EARLY IN THE GAME...I THINK THIS IS THE CARTRIDGE I HAVE BEEN LOOKIN FOR LONG RANGE GROUND HOG HUNTING HERE IN SW PA.....THERE BAILING HAY NOW AND LIFE IS GOOD!

May your expectations be fulfilled.
My 260AI likes 140 SST's. 47.6 gr. Rel 22. One of the most miserable rifles I ever had built ( Rem action - Krieger 8 twist) that took near 1,000 rds to find what it liked. Found just about "give-up" time.

Good hogging with yours.

CaptianMal thank you . guess I got lucky....found accuracy early......better lucky than good I suppose!!!!!.284winner... yep got what I want, but not really......,lost my best shootin buddy/spotter to cancer in 08....so I had to find a way to shoot and spot at the same time....rather be shootin a .300 weath with my buddy spottin,,,but that's no longer.... breakin in a young fella this summer so who knows what next year holds ???

One thing we do know is we don't know the future. Most all of my old friends are dead.

I have a muzzle brake on my 260 AI. many of my hunting rifles and all of my target ones. Like to see when it hits.

What rangefinder do you use for those distances? I shoot prairie dogs at 700 plus but can't get good ranging info on the prairie after 800 yards.

Good shooting! A first round hit on a whistle pig at 947 is a fine shot.

I love the .260 AI. I built one on, of all things, an '03-A3 Springfield action but it turned out to be a fine shooter (the next one will be a Savage or a Remy - much easier to 'get it right'). It accounted for a coyote at a lazed 846 yds. across one of my neighbor's pastures. 140 gr. Hornady BTHP Match bullets don't expand much but they do the job on the smaller stuff with some authority.
